A netlabel, also called online label, web label or mp3 label, distributes its music in digital audio formats (mainly MP3 or Ogg) online. Netlabels often work like traditional record labels to produce and promote music projects (such as albums or compilations). Most employ guerrilla marketing to promote their work. Few netlabels earn money for participants.

The primary difference between netlabels and record labels is that netlabels emphasize free downloads, as opposed to physical publishing (CD, vinyl or DVD). Often, the music is released under licenses that encourage sharing, such as the Creative Commons Licenses. Artists typically retain the copyright.

I don't realy see the need...

A netlabel is only usefull if it focuses on just one genre, a multi genre label ( like mt.org ) will be, will be so cluttered with releases of different genres that listeners will be overwhelmed and thus go to another site for music.

If you want to be on a netlabel contact the ones that exsist in your genre...

QBical has a point.
Though, what I will do in a very near future is promoting MT users CD's, with the possibilty to buy it via the MAZ Shop.

Hmm,

my idea was to spread our music round the globe in a format that everyone could listen to. Everyone knows how to play a song in winamp but not many are able to get one tone out of the mt. In my opionion the listener ( except the one´s here at mt.org or let´s say: every musician ) is not interrested in HOW the music is made, as long as it sounds good. So maybe we could get some new audience for our music.

I think this is an interesting idea.
I had a similar idea:
we get mt users to make tracks which they are happy to be distributed. Stick these in a zip file along with madtracker. then put the zip file on a legal torrent site free for people to download.
Just a thought on promoting madtracker. Would it work?

hi!

we provide our music to visitors of our site freely so they can print out their cd covers and burn the cd themselves. but his site is just in german: www.musiqus.org

as i also started making music with trackers and sometimes still do (for nostalgic reasons *g*) i think about starting some kind of an online sampler there that just includes tracker songs. maybe in a fitting genre like electro/house or jungle/d&b.

what do you think about it? the songs which could be included should just be tracker songs and should also be of a competetive quality ... and for sure: no snatched loops or melodies that somebody could claim anything about it. and, of course, gema(or similar)-free.

i think, my crew would also support that idea.

ciao,
mészi.
