Hey everyone -

I'm curious, what do you guys use for mastering software for stuff that goes to disc? Anything relatively cheap?

Thanks!

hey guido, search the old forum for my guidlines on mastering, I cant be bothered writing it all again.. it was a bit of a novel.

Being a professional mastering engineer, I cant recommend any software that will give you 100% what hardware can do.

Most people thing that can just chuck there mixdown through a bit of software and fiddle with nobs until its sounds good. But doing it that way is very short sighted and blind.. and although it may sound good on your speaker it may sound shitty and have phase cancels on other speakers. Mastering is somewhat of an art.. but through not wanting to right another novel.. i will give you 3 software solutions.

1. T-racks 24 by IK multimedia.. this is a standalone proggy which offers basic tube compression Multiband limiting and an EQ as well as some really primative stereo feild widening. Its ok.. alot of people use it and it tends to give nice result real quick.. but to a trained ear there is holes... big holes (ie the EQ is shite)

2. Izotope OZone - now this is more like it, DX plugin for most sound editors, offers multiband compressor (yeah.. thats what you want), harmonic exciters and lots of other bells and whistles.. this is probably the most like hardware you are going to get. so far.

3. Wavelab and steinbergs ME (mastering edition plugins) 0- really warm.. but fairly limited.

cheers.. check them out.. choose your favourite Smile

Hello again!

Thanks so much for all the incredible information.

Now that I am on to starting to learn mastering techniques, does any have any ideas for a good quick start website or book or anything? I know that mastering is probably sometimes the longest part of the process, but a nice gentle introduction would be very helpful.

Any ideas? Thank you!
