windows firewall, is it any good?

Hey sup? In 2 days I'll have an internet connection at home again after a 2 year hiatus & was wondering if the standard windows XP professional firewall is any good at stopping hackers from browsing through my shit.

In the past I used the free zonealarm thingy, but since windows comes equipped with it's own firewall, do I need to install another one?

grtz

Richard

Go with Zonealarm. Doesn't hurt to be safe.

XP Firewall should suffice. I remember having read some tests, which indicated that for normal usage its safe. Unless you start installing virus/adware/spyware-things that give access to your computer from the outside, the normal firewall is okay enough. But, as CL said, extra security doesn't inflict hurt either.

Having two firewalls running on the same system can cause problems though, wouldn't recommend it. Like Inge said, Win firewall is good enough for most people, but if you want extra security then a dedicated software might do the job better.

The Windows firewall only stops attacks from outside going in - but it does not prevent traffic from the inside going out (like trojans) so I would reccomend getting a third party firewall like Zonealarm as suggested by Chicago Lollie. I`m no expert though.

... it's not... if you telnet into someones comp you will auto enter if someone hasn't got a password...

otherwise you first have to gues/find the pasword in some way... no nonsense... ever tried it?

Right. So you assume that approximately half of all computers on this earth can be accessed directly via telnet, without MS thinking 'hey, it might be bright to disable this service for the sake of safety?'.

Apparently you did, so I asked some persons who most probably know what they are talking about, and received the following (Dutch) answer:

Quote:
WIndows heeft wel een Telnetserver ingebakken; maar deze staat standaard uit. Verder moet je volgens mij ook de username weten; en de enige naam die je zeker weet (Administrator) krijgt tijdens de installatie netjes een password Wink

The windows XP firewall is sufficient as Inge already said, but try to go for XP SP2 in which the firewall is improved.

U can always go for zonealarm, but then i advice to turn off the XP firewall, Zonealarm is somewhat better to administer and is less difficult to configure.

I use the xp sp2 firewall, and have no attacks/trojan problems at all, never used 3rd party firewalls, i installed loads of firewalls @ customers, but that's more in a business enviroment anyways.

cheers.
