Computer hardware problem, computer won't close down

Hey s'up?

I recently bought me a PCI to PCMCIA/PC-CARD adapter, and build this device in my desktop pc, enabling me to use my echo indigo i/o soundcard in my pc. (http://www.xpcgear.com/pci2pcmcia.html)

All of this works perfectly, low latency & bliss soundquality, but now I can't seem to turn off the pc without it automatically rebooting, even tho I choose NOT to reboot! (same if I hold down the power button for more then 5 seconds) Only choise I have is pulling the plug, but this can't be good for my system in the long run.

This has been the first pci card that I've ever installed myself, so maybe I forgot something or did something wrong?? Anybody here ever heard of this problem before? help!

grtz

1: get the latest drivers for the device from the homepage of the producer and install these. Make sure to install them properly if - for whatever unimportant reason - they aren't digitally signed. If you encounter such a message, just click 'install anyway'; digital signing is 99% utter nonsense.

2: uninstall the card (via device manager, right mouse button on the thing, uninstall device), boot down the computer, and put the card in another pci slot.

3: there might be an option in your bios that does something funny is an active pci-card is detected, such as autoboot. Check if you can find any 'wake on pci' setting, and disable.

4: install all updates for windows xp. that's nice either way, although you might wanna skip the validation tool if your xp is illegal. the latter is no big deal, but it might be irritating.

5: update your bios. not the first thing to do since it might mess up your board if performed improperly, but it can do miracles for the way your motherboard works concerning mistakes and efficiency.

6: test the card in another computer and see if the problem occurs there too. If so, then the card sucks. If not, then it's a specific problem related to your own computer.

7: kill your cat. it doesn't solve the problem, but it helps expressing emotions.

Mind you: cats are not Wi-Fi-enabled. You could consider Bluetooth, but only if the cat is in a range of 10 meter from the target pc.

cheers for the suggestions,

I disabled 'wake on PME' (dunno what this stands for->power management error, maybe?) & another wake on blah in the bios , and now the computer shuts down normally Smile

I'll never touch my cats, though I already have 4 & one is pregnant!
