Here's a question for ya.
If you make up a beat using various kick, snare, and hihat samples then lay a similar rythmned drumloop over the top for a bit of extra beef, can you call that your own beat?
Just trying trying to walk the fine line of originality and plagarism |

I see no harm in that .. as long as you use loops like highhat loops, the res would be over the line imo
(over the line when you are also using a kick etc etc of a loop) |

Are you talking about legal consequenses - as far as i know you may have to pay roalties and ask permision even though you hide it. |

I'd never say I did it myself simply cause I didn't. But then again I'm not a fan of loops at all. The only use I have for it is when I chop them up and use as seperat samples. |

Again to get that right:
You have one(or more) track(s) with your kicks, snares and hihats.
And on another track you put a drumloop along.
Hmmm....well the result is certainly different than that drumloop alone.
I did that on some songs of mine.
I tracked a beat myself with kicks, snares and hihat and on another track I put in a drumloop (free license from "beats, breaks and scratches").
The beat sounded phatter and very different.
I have no problem with it but I know if I had used only that drumloop it wouldīnt be mine and it wouldnīt sound good either.
So for me there ainīt no big deal!

Thats even better! Mixing them along with other drums and changing the rhythm melody gets you an entire new beat! |

you cant really call a loop that youve masked with a few other hits your own loop, and for copyright you wouldnt have a leg to stand on, i use loops fairly often, mainly hihat loops, in my tracks. but i always program a couple of lines of perc as well. i dont think theres anything wrong with it, although some do, it gives me more time to work on other things. |

I wasn't actually talking about legality issues here. Because you cannot copyright a beat!!!
Still, these days I try to steer towards originality. But man, using cut loops/even multiple loops makes a beat sound so much phatter. |

in my opinion...
i think use of loops is just fine. even if you use it dry. somebody worked very hard on putting that loop together, as though some may argue that it is for chopping purposes, i think if a loop inspires you to write a song, then use it.
as for putting your own kicks and whatnot over another loop...
in my own experince, i have found that the drums get a little too cluttered. i usually put a high pass filter on it to take out the bass frequencies leaving some of the snare and then the rest of the higher misc percussions. i personally find no harm in that.
to me, it helps me finish songs... lately i have been getting too distracted with certain parts of songs (ie. beat) so a loop helps to calm my own self-criticism and lets me get on with writing... and most importantly... finishing |
