Website move & hosting

The website will move on my own dedicated server this week.

Actually it is running simultaneously on the 2 servers (the old one, and mine) while the DNS update is being propagated worldwide. This will allow a smooth transition and you should not even notice it. Wink
The only problem will be for the forum avatars, because if you upload it on the old server, it won't be on the new one.

And the second point is that I plan to do free hosting @ madtracker.net.
This would be available to registered users only though.

Here are some rules that will apply to this:

  • Only MT2-related work will be accepted (i.e. not your last holidays pictures)
  • No direct link to non-HTML files will be allowed from other websites
  • There will be a small banner on the top of the site. Not even adds, just a link to MT.org, the music page, the forum, etc.
  • Your link will be yannick.madtracker.net (where you replace yannick by the subdomain you chose)
  • You will have 30 MB
  • You will maybe be able to buy a "premium" subscription to have 100 MB without the banner and with external linking. This could be based on a yearly fee or something

Any comments can be posted below. Very Happy

Yannick

Hi Yannick!

The webhosting is a great idea since my other disk space I use for the madtracker site too is nearly full. This way I could add a lot points more to the tutorial.

Regards

Question Php support?

Idea Put "Free 30MB hosting on Madtracker.net" in the "What you get when you register Madtracker" box!

Cool! like the idea of free hosting (neat trick to give this to registered members only Wink). That's one standard question that keeps popping up on the boards with regular intervals, "where can I get some free webspace?". Now we have an answer, as long as the person asking is registered Razz

question: have you considered adding some sort of admin tool for the music, so that people could update/change/delete/add links to their own music on here? I've noticed several dead links in the music section (was a couple of weeks ago though, so maybe that has been corrected). I guess you're often too busy to go through that stuff all the time to check that the links work. But with an admin tool people could do the maintenance themselves, wouldn't have to go through you. Could be a feature for registered users also, or a feature of that said banner on the madtracker.net pages Wink

Beatmax, I can fully host your tutorial. It can't be more MT-related than this, so if you need extra space, there is no problem.

Daxx909, no PHP, sorry. But probably with the "premium" thing. Smile And thanks for the advice, will update this when it's ready.

Sunbuster, this would require a user registration system, which would be quite complex to make since the current music page is open to everyone. And people could abuse it and link to their website rather than the music file itself, etc. I'd rather have a "Report broken link" button or something.

yeah, I started thinking about the abuse issue also after I posted that Rolling Eyes A "report broken link" button would certainly be easier Smile

Sounds like a really nice idea!

Though...

... will this mean that only .mt2's will be allowed there, or is it possible to upload mp3's aswell? (which is naturally done in mt2, or parts of it..)

How can one check whether or not a song is made in mt2? Smile But if the 30 mb's are part of the registration, I think that mp3's would be a nice feature.

Why? Isn't that the main feature of putting your music online, so that you can sign up for different databases? Or do you have a rocksteady plan to advertise this database (tsin? Wink)

Eitherway, I think it will be a great improve to offer even 30 mb of webspace for a registration. It makes it very much worth the money. Can people design their own room theirselves? Or is it only functioning as a archive for .mt2's?

MP3's will be allowed, yes.
You'll have an FTP access to build your page. There you are free to do what you want.

As long as it's in the context of MadTracker, it's okay for me.

About the external linking, I'll probably make a system of intermediate download page then. I don't want this free hosting to be used for basic file storage as you can imagine.
Bandwidth is not cheap, and even if I have some good deals with my boss, I'm not against some promotion of this website via the free hosting. Wink
(At least I'm not bullshitting you Very Happy)

If some of you want to test-drive the hosting, just e-mail me (mention your registration name so that I can find you easily). (I'll take the 3 first only. Wink)

Someone out there is lucky; I already got a rocksteady and huge server, so someone else may take my 30 mb's for testing Wink

Yes, sorry. Wink

Not only for promoting registration, but also for practical reasons since I use the registered users database for the hosting mechanism.
