Well, here's my suggestion on the matter:

Run the compo as one normally would, but on the compo page, mention that the best entries will be burnt to cd.

Then, when the results for the compo have come through, have the public vote for the tracks they would most like to see on a cd.

Best 15 to 20 tracks (or 30 to 40 tracks, if the cd is released as a 2cd pack) are then taken, mastered, and cd-erised!

But, that's just my suggestion on the matter. I'm sure there are other ideas that come to mind for this topic Very Happy

ok, but how do you define if someone is just at the beginning or is experienced? If you put something like "only people that have been using the program for more than 2 years are allowed to enter", how do you check that?
But maybe one could limit the compo to people that have the pro-registration, and have been registered for 1 year at least? People that have the pro-reg are probably a bit more serious about their music, thus probably have more experience also... But there probably are serious talents out there that don't have the pro-reg also Confused

And as for me, either a promo CD or a compilation cd are fine by me. Both ideas sound good. I would buy either one. But the big question I have to ask myself is"which one would we all get the most benefit from?"

My thoughts on the matter, straight and simple.... Smile

Well, personally, I think the answer to that one is pretty clear. A promo CD with all the extras we've been discussing would be the most beneficial. If it would boil down to a compo CD from last year then I wouldn't buy it, simply because I've got all the tunes on my HDD and because I've listened to all the tunes so many times they've become boring (one of the downsides to being a judge Wink ) If it's a CD planned for the next compo then I'd probably not buy it either, because I then can download all the tunes once the compo is over. But if we're talking a fresh promo CD, with choons I can't download from somewhere, plus a lot of other stuff that could be usefull to me (talking mastering tutorials mostly right now), then I'd more likely than not buy it.

Very good idea!!

I love the idea of having my songs on a CD. But, Why introduce multimedia on the CD? The best promotion for the program is to make an Audio CD, and to promotion it to the top. When people hear it and knows it have been done with MT2 you will have lots of registrations, I think.

Another thing, the songs included, Are going to be of the 2 past Compos? What about the benefits for the autors? I know some people in the radio in Spain, and I think it could be very good promoted here.

Waiting for your answers.

Well, my opinion is that since it's to promote the program, it would be pretty silly not to provide the program with the CD also, since the technology is available to do so. And since the program would be on there, why not add some stuff that would make it easier for a beginner to start using the program, and maybe provide some tips'n'tricks for more advanced users also? It would make it more unique on the market, thus work as an eye-catcher.

I guess the basic idea I would want the customer to think if I was to do this is: "wow, great music, I want to make stuff like this, how can I start doing this!?". Then instead of directing the user to some download site, or say "pay up and get the program", you provide the program on the CD directly and instead say "Start playing now, get the pro-registration when you want more features". You eliminate one step for the consumer, since he/she doesn't have to go out and find the software first, which maybe leads to him/her loosing interest. Instead he/she can just pop it into the CD-drive and start of, listen to some demos, read some tutorials, load up a prebuilt sample pack and have his/her first basic tune finished in a couple of hours. I can't of course be sure, but my bet would be that you get a lot more people hooked on the actual product (the program) this way, than to just provide them with kick ass music and say what program it was made with.

These are of course only my thoughts, and I would hope more people voice their opinion on this matter, so that Yannick gets more ideas on how this could be handled properly Wink

I think it was leaning towards the tunes being MADE specially for this CD, not sure though Confused As far as benefits for the authors, I wouldn't expect more than fame/credits for the authors, perhaps some small one time payback, maybe the CD for free or something like that. We have to remember that Yannick isn't any multi-million dollar record company Wink Me for one would be more than happy if only my name is printed in the sleeve notes and I got the CD home for free Smile

Yup yup, agree completely, except it should be someone elses name in the sleeve notes... Oh, no, not mine, bleh, course not! I was thinking along the lines of, er, you know, that person that, um, makes music, and, er, has that, uh, name, yeah...

Nah, not him... Hmm... You know the one, right? The one with the name? Who makes music? Which could be anyone? At all? Except me of course because my previous compo entries will speak on behalf of *that* department Razz

28 people voted, and what was the minimum, 500 copies. Well everyone potential users are not here who will discover mt when buying the cd Smile It should be more like promotional to madtracker than this compo, allthought it could promote this compo, to get people intrested in next compo too, but the main focus should be the mt2 and mentioning the future arrival of mt3.

I believe Yannick said something back there that something from the profits would be paid to the artists. I don't think thats neccessary, if the cd is sold like 500-1000 copies. With the money from the cd Yannick could use the development of mt3!) It's a different case then if it's sold like million copies and i'ts on top10 albumlist in music television. Very Happy

Still, i would buy it if the price is reasonable and the way of payment won't be too hard for people with no creditcard.

Indeed, the point of the CD is to attract more users that you currently have in the forum. It is also a propotional medium for MadTracker but especially for the artists who participate to the compo.
No royalties will be sent to the artists (it would be too complicated) but the price of the CD will be as low as possible... so that a lot of them will be sold hopefuly.

Yeah it would be a good memory. Finding it somewhere at old days. I could show it to my grand kids someday,
"your grandad participated in a compo, yes, yes it was the legendary madtracker, oh those days were so much better than nowadays."
"wow grandad tell us more about the time when the programs didn't make the songs themselves and actual people was involved making them"
"Lemme tell you about the old 4track recorder what recorded in c-cassette"
"No grandad our mom told that we could get nightmares from those scary storys"

lol Very Happy

btw actually I think the CD would attract a lot of people if the cover is looking awsome and the features are worth buying

also the content of the CD should be mainstream to be sure of a good selling product wich shows the quality's of Madtracker.

How do you want to distribute this CD ?

A deal with an independent label could be interesting.

Several ones could be quite interested in such a project, especially when you consider that no money has to be put in it's realisation, as it will be some kind of compilation.

For the CD cover, there are enough photoshop/GIMP specialists here for this...

Wouldn't it be possible, once the results of the (music) compo will be known, to organize a CD cover / booklet creation contest too, where the winning prize is to become THE official CD booklet ?

As digital music has become a big issue lately, and as people are fed up with all the loosy covers they can hear at the radio, a compilation made by a vivid, quality aware and very eclectic but yet unknown digital music scene could sound quite exciting to some indie labels !
