Hi!

I was wondering what the best method would be to get a rollin beat. I usually use loops using the 90 xxxx offset command but I know that it is also possible to do the beats with single samples too. Though I havent really tried it yet. Anyone here who has some resources? Spinwarp is a nice source for that. I am actually workin on a Dīn`B chilly tune. I will post it in the music section if I am ready with it Smile

I am thankfull for any help

Regards

I'm guessing whatever works the best for you is the best way Smile Me, I don't use loops, I use separate samples. But then again, not sure I qualify as an expert on this subject. Razz

You should really ask Inge, the chief DnB engineer Wink

btw1. is it that short piece you sent to me you're working on now? I'll want to hear the end result Wink

btw2. I'm on my way to complete a DnB tune myself also (forgot to mention it in my e-mail). If you're interested I could send the mt2 to you (you'll get a preview, before I submit it to the music section) Smile

I don't know if this is useful for you, but I found for beats you may want to set your LPB to 16. This way, you can create a 'swing' by for instance putting a kick or snare one line before or after it's original position. Also putting a bit of silence in your cls hihat samples (before the sample ofcourse) can give a nice effect. I made an example beat to show you what I mean, notice the way the kicks are placed. You can find it HERE.

Hope this helps.

What does EDx do then? make the sample arrive later or something?

yes, instead of the sample starting exactly at the line the note is, it starts a number of ticks later, defined by what you put instead of x in EDx.

I aint no DnB maestro or anything, although I do often use DnB elements in my industrial/experimental songs.. Because they seem to fit together quite well (ie my song "Tears").
Generally I enjoy the (fast becoming oldskool)
Boom tak Boomtak BoomBoom Tak BoomTak

but there is a few nice little things you can do to make that generic beat more interesting.

One of the things I like to do is intermitantly cut the snare short IE :

Boom Takkkkkk BoomTak|

BY using the cut note One position down from every second snare. (this is a very industrial sort of thing but works well I think... listen to "closer" by NIN whom cuts every snare.. not exactly DnB tho)

another thing I like to do is get the rolling Retriggers on the snare happening with a pan at the same time.
This is the E9x command. x only works with 3, 2, or 1 , with 1 being the fastest retrigger and 3 being the slowest. try this for a good snare effect.

NOTE VOL PAN EFFECT
C-4 10 30 00 0E92
C-4 30 70 00 0E92
C-4 50 A0 00 0E92
C-4 80 C0 00 0E92

if the retrig is to fast for you try E93.. another good effect is to build up the retrig IE

e93
e93
e93
e92
e92
e91
e91

anyways. These effects are really stand out.. if you dont go overboard with them Smile

here's a must-have sample for producing jungle and a lot of drum & bass too for that matter. it's that cymbal-ride-like hiss you hear on almost every dnb track..

use it like a hi-hat so every 1/2 beat. e.g.

::track1:: ::track2:: (amen brother cymbal)

[bassdrum] [hihat]
---- [hihat]
[snare] [hihat]
---- [hihat]

http://members.optusnet.com.au/michalb/amen_brother_cymbalhiss.wav

Wink you'll know what i mean when you put it to use. it's off the original 'amen brother' drumloop - the most widely used jungle/dnb drumloop ever!!

Cool

Use the amen and die...you'll love it the first year of programming drum 'n bass. After that, your primary concern will be to enter flamewars in dedicated drum 'n bass forums about whether you should use it or not. And after that, you discover Recycle and loads of other classic drumloops. In the end, and equilibrium is found, and you'll use it sometimes. Rolling Eyes

oh crap, i just noticed my example of how to use it didnt turn out too good..

anyway, inge, i dont use the loop so much as just rip stuff out of it like bassdrum, snare, and of course that cymbalride that goes throughout it... come on man cut me some slack, its not looping the loop, its just using a tiny little part of it!!

Cool
