General

VST (Virtual Studio Technology) is the name of a type of musical plug-in created by Steinberg. The technology has expanded the abilities of MadTracker to a large degree. MadTracker fully supports VST effect and instrument plugins , and does so in a clear and straightforward way. To get you going, MadTracker comes shipped with a wide range of VST effects and instruments.

VST instruments (VSTi)

A VSTi is a virtual instrument or a "softsynth". This is synthesizer software that can be opened inside a host such as MadTracker. The main difference between using samples and softsynths is that a softsynth generates the actual sound from scratch, whereas samples have rather fixed characteristics. Because of that, a VSTi can be manipulated within its boundaries to generate unique sounds.

VST effects (VSTe)

A VSTe is an effect (such as a delay or a phaser) in the form of a plugin. The advantage of VSTe-support in MadTracker is that you can use effects that are not among the basic track effects. Furthermore, an unlimited amount of different VST-effects can be assigned or routed to one track.
