Okay...yeah, it's a stupid name--I'm bad at coming up with song titles. Anyway, this is the first track I've produced with a registered version of MT2, so the sound quality at least should be a lot better than the previous things I've uploaded.
This is what I've been working on the past couple of months, and I think my technique is improving, but I'd appreciate any comments. As with everything I do, it's 100% tracked--I'm going for as much realism as possible. Thanks for listening.

Your tracking skills are amazing! The guitars are extremely lifelike. The arrangement and melodies are very nice as well.
The only downside is that the guitars are kind of muffled while the drums are piercing and clean. This makes for a strange contrast and makes it sound less real to me.
Keep 'em coming! |

Thanks guys--I'm really glad you liked it. Frazze--I can see where you're coming from about the guitars sounding a little muffled compared to the drums. Do you think it's something a little EQing of the guitars or compression or something like that might fix? Or do the guitars just need to be louder? I think I might have gone a little overboard with EQing the drums--I kind of accidentally stumbled upon a really "big," Led Zeppelin-like sound for the drums, and I really liked it, but it does kind of overshadow the guitars. Hmm. Something to play with.
Thanks again for the comments! |

I dont know if its the right word, but the guitars seem to be a little overcompressed. |

Nearly perfect track!!
The melody, the atmosphere... I gave it right away 5 stars in my media library.
Only thing bothering me was loudish snare. |

Eq is probably the way to go, I can't go into specifics because I stink at working equalizers myself. |

Yeah, the mixing/mastering aspect is the most challenging for me, too--I'm not a sound engineer. It doesn't help that Madtracker doesn't recognize that I have 5.1 surround sound for some reason (it's my on-board audio), so it sounds quite a bit different while I'm tracking it than it does when I export it and play the WAV file. I always have to export it before I know what it really sounds like. It makes getting the mix right a bit challenging. Maybe the reason it sounds muddy is because I tend to up the lower end of the spectrum too much while I'm tracking since Madtracker 2 doesn't use my subwoofer, and then it ends up with way too much bass.
@ Amok, I understand what you're saying, but compression in the audio sense--as I understand it--refers to a process by which a song's dynamic range is smooshed--the softer sounds become louder, while the louder sounds remain the same, so it creates an overall impression of a louder track. It can also even out the sound a little bit. Too much compression removes a lot of the dynamic nuances, so your classical and jazz tracks receive very little (if any) compression, and your more aggressive rock/pop/dance tracks receive more compression. You can find a number of free VSTs that are "compressors" or "limiters." Wikipedia summary: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_level_compression. I apologize if you knew that already.
@ Crux_Borealis, thanks for the comments--I'm glad you liked it! I will see if fixing the EQ will tone down the piercing snare a little bit. You guys are right--the drums are a little too...I don't know, loud/brassy for such a generally subdued track.
I'll play with it this evening and post the results. |

What i am trying to say is that you should give more high frequencies to the guitars (EQing)...
Let them sound clearer. |

Amok--I see what you meant now. Sorry about that. I didn't mean to go into lecture mode, and rereading what I wrote I kind of sounded like an arrogant ass. I didn't intend it to come out that way. I apologize.
Okay--I've been messing with it for the past few hours, and here's what I've come up with:
http://files.filefront.com/final+compmp3/;9653457;/fileinfo.html
I changed the master EQ settings to raise the levels where the guitars are meatiest, and on the snare drum EQ I lowered the higher end range to make it more subdued and less obnoxious. I changed the settings on the amp of the crunchier-sounding guitar to bring it out more--I may have gone a little too far and made it too bright, but I'm not sure. I also added a very small amount of compression.
Thanks again for the comments--I really do appreciate them. It's good to have ears other than mine listen to this. |

If im honest, i think you did too much on EQing the track. It was pretty good so far. Take the 1st version and add a bit treble to the guitars and it will work, imo... |
