Snarkle:   Bad

This is a very festive ¾ classical tune with a nice sense of humour. There are similarities between this and his 2006 compo entry, but, as good as that last track was, I prefer this newer one. It’s still light hearted, but it’s also much more dramatic and serious in parts.
It’s really in the arrangement and instrumentation where this track is so well done. For example, the part where suddenly the music stops briefly and there’s a timpani playing the F, then C notes as if to put a final ‘seal’ on that section of music was really clever. The next two bars go from self important with tubas, more timpani, and trombones, to light hearted with flutes, string pizzicatos, and glockenspiels. This was great, as was the modulation to the key of E, then back to F for the chorus.
The part with the clarinet and English horn is very nice, too, and introduces another mood entirely. Part of the change in mood is the unexpected shift into the key of C#, and it’s really impressive the way that this composer is able to move back to the key of F for the chorus again.
Now, for the technical stuff: the samples themselves sound great and work very well together, though I didn’t notice any multisampling and most of the loops are quite clicky. This module proves that, if handled right, Madtracker is an outstanding tool for budget classical music production.
