So I got a keyboard, hooked it up to my computer, it registers, everything works. I can play my keyboard and have it record what I'm playing in a tracker! Now........... how do you play a keyboard
Does anyone know of a good place on the internet for free keyboard lessons? |

ok, i don't know a site offering keyboard lessons (maybe you should try google? ) ,-)
And - of course- i'm also not able teaching you keybord-playing via the forum
But here are some hints, which may be useful for your first steps:
1. first of all you should have a at least a minimum knowledge of notes and music sheets.
2. then -of course- you should should have studied your keybord'S manual for understanding the basic functions of it and how to use its MIDI Interface(if you have none, have a look at google
3. now take a pen and set it on the keyboard's finger board.
take your right hand and lie it on the pen as if you want to grab it.
now have a look at your hand - none of your fingers should be straight in line but all should be curved (as if you want to grab the pen ) and each finger should lie on a single key.
keep the finger's form and position in mind, because you need it when playing the keyboard.
4. Now let's play:
place your right hand's thumb on any Note "c" on the finger board (keyboard)
(if you don't know where "c" is located, read point 5 first)
position your fingers in the way i described in point 3 (without pen of course )
now your thumb should lie on "c", your forefinger on "d", your middle finger on "e", your ring finger on "f" and the pinkie (little finger) on "g"
now try to play the notes from "c" to "c'", simply by pressing the buttons below each finger.
while holding the note "e" (you should have used the middle finger for doing that) jump with your thumb beneath the middle finger to "f".
then use your forefinger for holding "g", the middle finger for "a" and so on until you reached "c'" with your pinkie.
after this, we are going play this one backwards, beginning with "c'" to "c".
you hand should be still in the position you had after reaching "c'". The little finger lies on "c'" and your thumb on "f" (the other fingers in between, of course )
Now start playing c',h,a,g,f,(e,d,c)
when reaching the "f"-note (with your thumb), jump with your middle finger across the thumb to "e" and play the rest with your forefinger (note d) and your thumb (note c)
now keep on trying playing these notes, until you are able to play this fluently
Congratulations, you have just finished you first keyboard lessons.
5. if you have no idea of the note's location on the keyboard's fingerboard, read this first:
the white buttons represent the notes c,d,e,f,g,a,h(or b),c
the black ones are for c#,d#, and f#,g#,a#
due to the fact that there is only a half step from h to c and e to f, there are no black buttons placed. you may use this as an aid for orientation.
there is also a nice feature in Madtracker, wich may help you:
simply load a module of your choice, and open the instrument editor by double-clicking of any instrument (you should use a lead instrument for that)
now start the song and watch the finger board of the instrument editor.
you will notice, that according to the notes that are played- the corresponding keys are shown as beeing pressed.
All you have to do then, is to look for the instrument's track and watch the notes.
Ok, thats it for now, i hope although this long post maybe a little bit confusing, it will help you in your first steps playing keyboard

Yeah, I got midi synched no problem. I'm on a laptop, so I used EMU's USB to MIDI adapter. Worked like a charm. About a tenth of a second lag, more than acceptable.
And I tried google. All I can seem to find is sites that offer the first lesson free, with the rest costing you. |

hmm i see... ok, i think no one is to teacj lessons for free
so i think the best thing you could to is going to a book-store nearby and look for some literature teaching you how to play keyboard.
it works, thats the way i learned playing keyboard
but i can't suggest you some books, because i learned it from a german author.
but there should be some literature in your mothertongue as well |

free piano lessons.
http://www.learnpianoonline.com/
for me it helped a lot.
http://www.secretsofsongwriting.com/
also very useful. mostly the free material is only what you need at first, since its hard to grab all material anyway while learning.
just start learning about the scales and try to play some music.
the simplest scales: C major, F# major, G major.
learn about the simplest chords.
there is also much material about the chords.. perhaps this chordhouse will help.
hm... actually with Madtracker I have quite much difficulties while playing "live" and recording it, the result is too scrambled (during keyjazz the note off messages are on wrong space, too coarse timing, buried on menus this keyjazz option, )and I always need to edit the notes after recording live some material. |
