Using a line-in signal for realtime VST wetting
Reply with quote

Ok, that cryptic headline needs some explaining...

I recently got myself an electric guitar. I'd like to use som VSTs for it, especially software amplifyers.

How would I accomplish this if I want it in realtime, so I can hear the result while playing?

If it helps, you could think of the guitar as a microphone or so, since it's just another line-in signal, except it comes from an instrument.

Addittionally, I'd like the possibility to record whatever comes out, but I don't think MT is the right choice for this operation.

Any ideas or suggestions?

first things that pops up in my mind is ofcourse cubase. I know it's expensive etc etc but that's the only audio tool I worked with when doing that kind of stuff. maybe there is a freeware that could do this for you aswell, if so I'd be interested in that too. maybe even something that works as a rewire host?

Does it have to be VST technology? I`m pretty sure there are a lot of standalone applications for effect prossesing the line in signal. Many soundcards will allow you to record "what you hear" but you may need a reasonably fast computer if you already use cpu cycles to process the sound effects. I guess a low latency soundcard would come in handy aswell.

I've tried looking for one as well, but the only one I could find is http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/FastAsPossibleDSP/
I tried it some, and it is got distort and some other effects. and it's not a vst, and had a slight delay of playing to sounding.

No I guess it doesn't have to be a VST. But it would be nice if it was so I could incorporate it into MT.

What is amplitube? Razz Me go google.

You guys will want to look at Kristal. ASIO/VST support plus has a nice little feature they call KRISTAL LiveIN, with which in their words you can "connect your mic/guitar and play thru KRISTAL using VST effects in realtime". I haven't tried this option myself, but I did try out the software otherwise and it seems solid.

the programs are free, but you need to pay for downloading them. A bit confusing if you ask me.

Go to http://guitarfx.net/ instead, found a direct download link there (didn't download because the site in general seemed a bit shady)

The whole project fell apart when I bought a cable for it and started lining the guitar to the computer. I had to much noise/static that it was unbearable to use it for anything at all.
