How can I insert or delete a pattern? I click on INS and DEL and nothing happens! MT 2.3.0

sounds weird ok, this might be a long shot, but do you run winXP or officeXP? Could this have anything to do with CTFMON in that case? have you checked what it says about this issue in the FAQ, under the topic "Some controls do not work properly under Windows XP! (Or when you installed Office XP.) " ?
