Okay, I can understand that. Tell ya what, I'll download Goldwave and test it. I'll tell you whether I'm missing out or you are. |

Okay, I gave it an in-depth trial. I spent more time on it than I probably should have, because I am aware that the different layout would automatically prejudice me against it.
Opinion: It still stinks. Even after I got used to the arrangement, it stinks. Audacity's menus are much neater, much easier to find what you need fast. And don't even get me started on the options Goldwave doesn't have.
Dude, just get Audacity. |

Naah, I use Audition 2.0, and like it very much Think the interface has only gotten better since the Cool Edit days. Besides, it doesn't matter what tools you use, as long as it gets the job done, right? |

Exactly. 83 I don't want a super fancy sound multi-track editor, or something with 20,000 features. Heck no.
For what I do with a sound editor? Goldwave is just dandy.
Edit: Actually, just to add. I have tried Audacity in the past and... honestly? I could say the same thing. I thought it stunk. XD But I've gotten so used to using Goldwave over a few years (four or five years, I'm sure), that I know that I can work it to do what I want it to do. For me, switching to a new editor would really be a step backwards.
If there's one thing I'd like in Goldwave though, it'd be dynamic time-stretching. But I work around that by using a really old version of Cool Edit specifically for that anyway, so I really don't have any hard-pressed reason to switch any time soon. :D
If I had to settle for Windows Vista at some point though, then I'd look into a switch. |

Time-scaling?! Where?! Can I get that old version of CoolEdit for free? I've been using a player that time scales and sampling off the soundcard.

True, but there is a considerable difference between digging a hole using a teaspoon and digging the same hole using a shovel. Conversly, there is a difference between stirring your tea with a shovel or a teaspoon.
Also, as lollie said, it sometimes depends on how familiar you are with the tool. |

Absolutely! That's a major thing to consider when selecting any tool. I doubt for instance I would at this point change to another tracker, simply because I've used this interface for so long now I'd hate to put time on learning something new. Only if some other tracker would offer a major (and I do mean major) benefit over MadTracker would I consider switching. |

Whoa, meant to reply much earlier.

Yeek. o.O Well, I don't know if it's around on the net anywhere. It's a 12-year-old demo version of CoolEdit 0.5. I only really use it if I want to stretch a sound out gradually over time (say if I want to make it start at 100% full speed, then end up being 25% that speed with no pitch changes), or in those certain cases where Goldwave's timestretch fails to stretch correctly (a saw-tooth baseline doesn't stretch very well D: ).
I can easily e-mail it up though. The whole thing's just over a meg in size. |
