midi keyboard trouble, input doesn't work

I hope any of you can help me out with this...

I recently decided to start using my ancient midi keyboard, and now have the following setup:
Roland PC-180 midi keyboard
Trust 5.1 surround soundcard sc-5100 (new)
Like the keyboard manual said, I plugged the midi IN cable in the midi OUT slot on the keyboard and the other end in the soundcard's joystick port...

Since I have an onboard soundcard on the motherboard, (AC 97), I uninstalled its drivers and disabled it in the BIOS (the onboard soundcard doesn't have a joystick port).

I downloaded and installed the latest drivers for the trust soundcard, and set the following in the BIOS (under legacy devices):
Game port address: 201
Midi port adrress: 330
Midi port IRQ: 10

In madtracker 2.6.1 I enabled midi and set "MPU-401" as the input device.

Thought I was done but the midi keyboard didnt seem to work so I downloaded this proggy, "MidiTest"...
http://earthvegaconnection.com/evc/products/miditest/#download
... which gave the following response once I pressed a key on the midi keyboard:
"Unexpected MIDI data! Received 00 (undefined) while expecting <remark>." where <remark> changes every time, for instance "F2 03 75 (Song Position pointer, Beat = 0)"...

In the device manager the soundcard and joystick port show up as:
CMI8739/C3DX PCI Audio device
Standard Game Port

If nothing else works I'll return the sound card and buy a USB midi cable, but wanted to try here first...

Thanks in advance for any insight you can give!

hmm, in my ears it sounds like there might be a risk that your midi keyboard has some errors. If possible, I'd try the same setup with another computer (other soundcard) to see if I get a midi-signal that doesn't say something with Unexpected MIDI data in MidiTest. If you can get it working on another computer, then the problem is in your current computer, and the soundcard would be a good candidate for the error point. If not, then I'd suggest the midi keyboard might be at fault, especially since you say it's ancient Wink

Thanks for your replies.

I still don't know exactly what the problem was but I returned the "Trust 5.1 surround soundcard sc-5100" and bought this thing instead:
M-audio midisport uno (midi usb interface cable)

I downloaded the drivers and manual from their website, installed, stuff appeared in the device manager, and in madtracker under midi devices input as "USB Uno MIDI In".

And now it works fine... so the trust soundcard must have been the problem...
