Automation, Effect control, and Where's that thing?

G'day!

I'm so glad I found MT, I'm really enjoying using it. I've wanted to make my own elctronic music for awhile, and this has made it very easy for me to do so. However, I have several questions that I hope you can answer for me. I tried to search for them on the forum, but it was difficult to find anything that even remotely answered these questions. Also, I think I read all the tutorials, but... I only saw 3. So if I missed some, please point me in that direction. Thanks in advance!

Questions:
1. Is it possible to put an effect on just one pattern? How?

2. Can I do an automation on just one pattern?

3. Same question with volume control

4. On a few sample songs, I think that I've noticed (I'm not sure) that some tracks are linked to a different track that has an effect on it. Such as drum tracks linked to track 15 which has the drummatic 3 vst on it set to feedback control. Is that possible? How do I do it?

5. I know a lot about music. I've been trained in classical and jazz music for about 15 years on both the violin and the piano. However, I know next to nothing about drums. Is there a guide to making a decent drum beat? Any tips, suggestions, ideas to make my drums sound more realistic?

6. Speaking of drums, I have several drum samples, but I don't like the way they sound when I use them. How do I make them less bad? Wink

7. Here's the first 1:30 of the first song on my first try with MT. I enjoyed it, and I'm planning on making the song longer. Any suggestions for me? I don't know where I should add effects, and I'm not sure that it is as balanced as it should be. Also that whole drum thing. Sad

8. What's an LFO? I see them on the VST control panels, and I don't know what that stands for. Or what it does.

9. Same with modulation envelopes?

10. In MT, what's the "drum pattern" option do in the Patterns menu?

11. What's the difference between a madtracker module and a fasttracker module?

12. I'm using Windows Vista. When I have the MT window maximized, none of my other sound producing programs make any sound. Is that on purpose, or is that something I can fix?

13. When I use the Analog Warfare 3 VST, I have problems with several of the presets on it. Even if I put one of those thingys that stop the sound on a track (it looks like a little bar, and I put it on with caps lock, and I don't know what it's called), it still continues to make sound, even when I stop playing the song. Why?! I love some of the presets on that vst, and I can't use them. Sad

----
Thanks again!

1-3. Effects must be put on channels. You could put an effect the master channel if you want the whole song to be affected.

There are commands for turning on and off effects in the manual, I don't know them by heart. Also automation can turn on and off effects (you have to play abit with them).

It would work something like... You put automation before and after the pattern where you want things to happen, with a "normal state", then play with the dots on the pattern you want effects.

The effect will then always be on, but automation can stop its sound. I'm pretty sure there are better ways to do this.

4. Go to the, eh, mixerboard?, rightclick on channels to route them. You can only route to higher channels. You can route many channels to one, and all will be affected by the effect(s) on that channel.

5-6. Some slight reverb is always nice.

8-9. LFO means "Low Frequency Oscillator". Google all terms you don't understand, MT uses standard terminology.

10. I find this a bit useless. You can make simple drumpatterns, but not edit effects on them.

13. Some VSTs don't work well with MT. Yannick usually says it's because they don't follow standards, and the rest of us almost never know any other answer.. Smile

1. F0 0103 turn on Reverb103, F0 0000 turn off,
Can define parameters nr effects from F1 to F8.

SoulEye, and JacekJRM did a good job already answering these questions, so I'm only going to add something.
Mostly because i promised to answer this thread yesterday Wink

1-3. About automation:
Yes, its all possible. In some cases you might have to automate the following pattern so that your mixing effects "return" into nominal wanted settings (depending on the song of course).
One tip would be.
If you're new to Automation or EQing, you should be drastically changing the gain on all the different frequencies so you can hear the changes that can be made. However.
Never make the EQ have a steep slope. You always want to curve into areas that you want to change. And make sure that the (next) following pattern changes without unwanted error sounds.

5-6. Just like SoulEye said, reverb fx really does wonders.
Effects like that will make it sound awesome. But don't get carried away Wink
Also keep an eye or ear out for technical drum patterns that are too repeative or too high on gain. (Now This is an error i just made on remixing compo, and its too late to fix it now). Unless you are making repeative stylished music, just be careful not to use same drum backgrounds too often.

10. I also find this one unnecessary. Selfmade drumpatterns are more creative approach.

13. It could be possible that the VST has spread all over your song
(using more than just one tracks of your song),
Try testing this, or automate your VST's track track so, that it gets Faded-OUT In parts where you need it to stop playing infinitely.

If all else fails: Try inserting silence (a sample of silence lol)
