Genre: early hardcore meets trance

Nothing special about this track. There's a quite horrible bassdrum at 1.20, a boring main melody (which makes me wonder if it shouldn't be longer, since it now sounds like the beginning of a longer melody) and a rather interesting violin-sample at 1.50. The beats are programmed in a creative way, although they lack depth, strength and drive to give this tune any sensation of speed.

Incomplete. That's how I feel about this track. It's the beginning of a trance track. It feels as if the track never quite lifts off. It just jumps around like an engine failing to start.

The drums in this track are it's strong point. Being almost the only thing playing for a long time that's good. The drums in the beginning definetly have promise of leading to some interesting music, with their military like snarebeats and the on and off of the kick. The drums are simply put interesting. Too bad they're mostly made out of loops, which makes me suspect they're from some loop pack. There is an art in programming drums, I hope you take the time to learn it, instead of relying on loops.

I hate the trance string brought in at about 0:50. First of, it's the dreaded typical trance string. Second the melody is simple to say the least. I get the sence that the artist tried to create some sort of atmoshpere where the repetitiveness of the lead would create a state of trance. Something like Da Hool's "Meet her at the Love Parade" or Josh Winx' "Higher state of consiousness". Not quite it the same genre, but you get the drift. Bottom line is, it didn't work. I was not surprised to read the words fruity in the instrument name of said sample...

Like I said, this is the beginning of a trance track. Or better yet, a tribal trance track. It has the potential to evolve into something like the techno tracks one can hear in the beginning of Max Graham's New Years set of 2002, or the psychedellic prog trance later on in the same set. As it is now though, it fails to deliver completely.

Originality: 5/10 <-- Within the genre.
Theme: 5/10 <-- Within the genre, 1/10 if it would have been pop music !
Arrangement: 7/10 <-- 9/10 without the synthleads
Technical: 7/10 <-- Ah, this damn synthlead
Quality:6/10 <-- Ah, this damn synthlead
Global: 6/10 <-- **, **** **** *********

A typical club-trance track. Repetitive... but well, it's club trance (a few filter evolutions could have made the whole stuff a lot better).

The sound of this one is very good I think. All sounds professionnal here. The bassdrum is deep, the bass well sustained. It's definitely a technically good entry. What's missing then ? Simple : it's or a catchier (and less repetitive melody) or some more original and evolving sounds (or both).

My hint : Trance is not just a style in which technology does it all, some more feeling in the melody & lead instrumenst would have made this entry way better. If only that contestant had used the great softsynths like Superwave P8 & Daichi Synth1 that were allowed for that compo, that are perfectly suited for creating great, original and powerful sounds for this kind of music.

Would it work in a club ? Sure !
Would it be a milestone in club music ? I guess not.
As you say it's your 1st trancer, I'll however say it's a promising 1st try. Your "Beginning" could indeed be the beginning of a nice career in trance music making. Don't give up and learn from the masters of the genre, especially on the synth lead issues.

Also something that I'll probably copy-paste 3 billion times within this reviewing process : NAME YOUR TRACKS ! This would give your audiance and us judges a better view of how your track is built, will help newbies to learn how to use MT and to beat you in next year's compo :)
