I need to know how to get one particular pattern to have an effect and not the whole track.

Get a microphone. record your vocal in a decent wave editor like the free audacity. Google it. (I have not used the MT wav recorder for years so not sure about that...) Then add sample to MT instrume ...

If the following don't work in XM, try fast tracker FX commands. There's a list in the wiki I think. Or somewhere.
