ive been using a bass sample for quite awhile now but i feel that this is not the best way to do it, for example if i set the pitch too high or too low it is sometimes inaudible (but these levels i should be able to hear!). can anybody point me in the correct direction? i produce hip-hop if that helps

Use better samples, or a VSTi. Also depends how low your speakers can go, as to what you can hear. |

Been using A bass sample, as in ONE? Diversify man! Use SuperWave, that's what Yannick included it with MadTracker for. Use a ton of samples you can find free on the net. Use a ton of virtual instruments you can find free on the net.
In other words, do your homework, expand your instrument list and have some fun! |

You can also use two or more bass samples or sounds as layers or mix them together to get more options and more vivid bass lines. |
