Anyway, 2.* is 100% closed-source. 3.* is open-source.
The reason there is no versioning on 3 is, well, it's in a horribly alpha stage, and has no need for it.
...

So, you are saying that v3 is a brand new rewrite with no code from the past !?!
It looks like there is a very 'loose' understanding of "Open Source"; recalling some of the remarks of Yan from the past ... 'I want to make my baby open source but ... only the developers will have access to sources up to the beta testing' ... !!!
|
Ehh... At least, that's what I've extrapolated.
There MIGHT be some basis off of 2, but, like I said, only Yan knows for sure.
He has said that the reason for the re-structuring is "the extreme spagetti code in MT2", that he needed to do a new build.
Let's get coding. |
We are looking for developers for MadTracker 3! |

little bit more and 10 years anniversary.
Perhaps to document source code at first (and seeing the development matches the plan) if we ever want to arrive somewhere? |

Any news on this development? Windows 10 is not having my Mt. 2.6.1 anymore and I am in dire need of Madtracker. |

Hello, are you saying that -- mt2.6.1. does NOT work under window$ 10 ?
In this case I guess the support making for win10/11/12/13/14 will be wasted effort too.
I propose MT3 shall be for a much older system if we want the new version (just like having for Commodore 64 besides a older pentium).
"Too bad" perhaps for new windows/linux users, who so far have got along and keeping all in one computer but just imagine the new MT versions coming out and holding on to the newerending changing windows versions which come out every 2-nd year almost, while there have been over 10 years and no MT3.
There is a reason why development is slow -- source has no documentation (so, unreadable) since it has been one mans project; endless compiler versions; time and newer platforms incompatibilities -- while someone is in his spare time trying to look at it and correct something, there have been already 5..7 newer windows versions and 2 newer VST hosts out which are incompatible with eachother.
So, development to already "old" system it is "still life",
and there will be no hassles which are "hey it does not work with my newest platform". |

it is a mess and too ambitious project. troubles are about the VST versions incompatibility with eachother. the asio versions, the unavailability of those older SDKs to have the support, the platforms and compilers -- so try to match all 4 of those.
steinberg took down the VST2 SDK. it is their decision.
so, it seems like 3 different builds? -- for dos, for those with VST2 and those with VST3 for newer platform, since it is not reasonable to ask from every programmer the older VST2 plugins to convert to VST3 or vice-versa.
all is way over my head.
* have seeked and looked the old tracker sources. none of them are documented. The older ones are also in pure assembly language (well, taking 10 times longer time). All of them are one-mans-projects, where it takes a millenium before I understand the source what to fix or where to put the new feature.
* the new tool for development is available - artificial intellect. perhaps it is more help. well, very little since it is itching too fast about source code writing and is very less about project and abstract view.
it is somehow the way to get the support for program under the DOS on the low level access. and for dos there are the least dependencies. however the VST support would be unrealistic(?). but it would support the MIDI IN-OUT and samples, multitrack soundcard (like M-audio Delta1010 or soundblaster 5.1), protected mode with DOS4GW (?).
It may help dinosaurs as me.
however I doubt if any of it is in interest as here is the question only about the latest platform and VST support.
still...
come on, it has passed 20 years, some of us, or most of us are already 40 years old. Perhaps time to develop the software as the real software engineers do (with the real project and development with RTL and flowcharts where it is assumed for coding goes just 20% time... ). |
