I'm afraid it's too late. The law has been validated.
It has to be approved by the Parliament though... So there is a little hope.

Well, if it does get through, I'm sure there will be quite a few software developers standing around the Parliment house, protesting for hours, throwing rocks at their windows, leaving bags of flaming dog turd on their front doorstep for them to put out with their (overly polished) black leather shoes...
Y`know, all that stuff you'd wanna do to the Parliment for the hell of it. |

I signed it too.
This law is a pure shame. Is the EU's aim to work for M$ ?!?
Sign the petition at http://petition.eurolinux.org/index.html too !
And spread the word around you, among your friends, families...

I'm not into politics usually, and am not a member of any political party, but the only political party who really does a campaign against those patents are the green (ecologists) party...
On June 13rd, don't forget that there are european elections, and that these elections might be the first ever elections with digital issues, so vote for whoever you want, but vote !
As this law has to be validated by the new parliament that will come out of those elections, I think it is quite clear that all MT users in the EU who are allowed to vote should go and vote for the ones who defend us...

you're right again TNK. if the elections would be the first to bring up digital issues such as this, if advertised correctly, there could be a large group of people who will oppose such issues as software patent laws. i have to stress that the word has to be spread to all! even if its your family members, they might not be programmers but they might have friends who have friends... and word like that spreads fast.
good luck! (wish australia could vote)

I wonder what the party for the animals has to say about this
(are they serious??). |

I Usually do not give political hints, but in fact, one of my mother's best schoolfriends WAS in the EU parliament from 1994 to 1999 and he told me too that only the green party (a party he was NOT member, this guy was rather conservative) felt themselves really involved in the european politics.
The green (ecologists) do not work only for the animals. For instance, in France, it's the only party yet who put it's programm online. This shows they are more concerned than other parties on :
- Digital issues.
- European issues.
Indeed, the green party is originally about ecology & stuff, but it has grown much larger. I read their programm and they had some quite interesting points in it like :
- They want to defend free software and developpers.
- They want to make culture as diverse as possible.
- They are against Software pattents / EU DMCA...
- They are the only ones who're really making noise around those subjects (atleast in France).
I am a member of no party, and never voted for the green party before, but if nothing changes until June 13rd, I think I will vote them.

Digital issues get very little coverage in the mass media, and often "regular" people say they don't want to be bothered by such issues, because it's "too hard to understand". They say it concerns only a few computer nerds. Wrooonngg ! It concerns everyone's life !!! And believe me, pro pattents do everything they can to get this issue the less discuted they can...
That's why most people do not understand how foolish and dangerous such laws are. My cousin started his own IT company one year ago, and he told me that if the EU software pattents would become true, he would have to shut his company down !
Sign the http://petition.eurolinux.org petition
and if you are european and old enough to be allowed to vote,
cast your 1st digitally oriented vote on June 13rd !
I definitely will !
