Why does everyone seem to share out their tunes in *.ogg format?
why not *.mp3 or *.wma
and how do i make .oggs?
i got a vst that can read them in madtracker but its a bit of a hassle...
is there an easier way? (p.s this .ogg format is new to me but trackers and stuff are not) |

Basically, OGG is like MP3 but free and with a slightly better quality.

Because .ogg is very 1337, like mIRC, trackers, and Amiga's. They have in common that they all are incompatible with the world as we know it, lack usability, and have hardcore users.

All the more reason to use it, right?
Seriously, I very much prefer OGG to MP3 and WMA (does anyone really use WMA?). OGG is so much better when it comes to quality and file size. The only downside is, as you said Inge, that OGG still is incompatible with many programs. I especially find it very annoying that Nero Burning Rom won't burn OGG on audio-cd's. Btw, does anyone know of a burning-prog that does this? |

As far as I know .OGG is open source - and can be used without licenses, unlike mp3. For developers that is. |

I don't care about Nero as it is a failure at CD Audio anyways, especially because it lacks subchannel support, which is essential for the preemphasis flag (Nere even fails at 1:1 copying). Though, there might be an plugin, as there are for many audio formats.
I use plugins in Adobe Audition for Ogg Vorbis and FLAC, hence I can both read and write there. Ogg Vorbis even decodes directly to float and also can be encoded from any resolution (which is also the case with MP3). |

Why I use OGGs?
Well first they are lincense free compared to mp3. They sound better at 64kbit/s compared to mp3 and they are smaller about half the filesize which is important if you dont have enough webspace. At least its a matter of taste
I recommend xmplay to play OGGs its a nice free player (320k). I`ve written something about OGG compression on my tutorial site you can see it here.

doubt winamp was around back then...
seriously, I prefer ogg aswell, from quality to size and the fact that mp3 is getting really old. too bad I have to stick around with mp3 due to my carstereo which wont play ogg files.
and if you don't have like a 3 year old winamp it should be able to play ogg so what's the fuzz about? |

I sometimes share my stuff in .mp3 (especially among non computer freaks, as the .mp3 format is still - want it or not - the most popular and the most supported format)
But indeed I prefer OGGs because their sound quality is better and that OGG is a free format.
About .WMAs... well, you know, I *love* Micro$oft...LOL |
