Posted: Thu Dec 08 2005 18:41 Good soundcard |
 |
Hi all, i'm searching for a good soundcard, the goal is not 64bit/96khz output or 10 in/out fiber ports, but simply a low cost one with the smallest lag possible.
I recently bought a mute midi keyboard, but unfortunately 42ms delay of my integrated cmedia audio is too much.
Any hints ?
thanks in advance |

M-Audio
anything by them is Leet (1337)
I have M-Audio FW Audiophile (f'n Rawks) 250 canadian.
do you want to do any recording? if so what type?
here.. go for this one...
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrackUSB-main.html
p.s. almost any good soundcard you buy (except creative, because CREATIVE SUCKS!!!!!!!!) will have asio support (ultra low latency) so, take your time to buy one. not like me who rushed into buying a shitty one (creative labs audigy 2 NX) and later discovered that it didnt have ASIO support....
so. moral. take it easy, think about it. its frickin hard not to spend money, i know, but... relax, wait, look, think ... and then buy. |

that might do the trick also, shouldn't be too expensive either. I have it's "larger" sibling and I'm very happy with it. The only downside so far (which is kind of major, but can be worked around), is that it doesn't have an internal routing/patch matrix (so that I could hook up any input to any output without using external hardware or software). If you don't need that, then the Phase 22 should be a fairly inexpensive solution.
EDIT: I actually looked at the one QBical recommended also when I was shopping for a soundcard, and that one seems good too. The only reason I didn't go for an audiophile in the end was that since my monitor speakers have balanced XLR inputs I wanted balanced outputs from my soundcard, something the audiophile doesn't have as far as I can tell. |

thank you all, i will go for m-audio 2496, i found a reseller near me that gives it for 100 euros.
@Qubical: what values do you reach in madtracker under madtracker->configuration->audio->(buffers,size,freq...) with audiophile 2946?
I also found asio4all, a nice tool that creates an overlay asio driver for near all the budget pci soundcards, it allows me to use cmedia8738 with 16ms lag, nice
Unfortunately, it cannot be used in madtracker too. |

I have also looked at the M-audio 2496 as it has gotten good reviews here and on other forums. But is this an older product. I think I read somewhere that this is about to be discontinued???? Has anyone heard anything about this? |

I advised the Audiofile PCI also to every mate of me that wanted to start with music!
For my laptop I have a Audiophile FW. This because USB is not (yet) that stable and has a higher cpu consumption than FW.
My real music pc (dedicated) has a RME Hammerfall HDSP 9652. But that one is more expensive (better as well) |

^^Have the same as you.
I´m satisfied with it since the new drivers 1.82 are available.
However, we need ASIO-support.

We should record a track for Terratec in the 'do they know it's christmas time'-fashion, entitled 'why your drivers suck harder than Creative's'. |

so true, for me it's unbelivable such a big company couldn't care less about the drivers for their cards. I'll also go with another brand next time. |

I use a Terratec Phase 26 and won't recommend it to anyone. I've heard great things about M-Audio (and to a point E-MU) so I'll probably go for one of those next.
