 |
Hello, I am a n00b (Downloaded Madtracker yesterday, I think I downloaded it a long time ago aswel, but I removed it because I thougt it sucked but after trying out different trackers I found out that the program did NOT suck, but my music skills suck ) Anyway, I was wondering if some of you madtracker-veterans could give me some tips how to get started (Visited Beatmax' tutorial already (nice work, Beatmax) and I have 128 Meg of samples)
EDIT: By the way, how can I change my username on the forum? I don't want to be stuck with this old username that I used years ago..... |

hmm, start simple, try out different things, download other people's music and analyze how it's done, read BeatMax's tutorial again
I don't know quite what else to say. I guess it's just to load up some samples, enter them in a pattern and hit play, see what happens. That's how I started a long time ago with screamtracker (or was it pro-tracker ). Maybe first figure out what kind of music you want to make. Try to hear your tune in your head, then try to get it to sound like that in the tracker also.
Another tip: if you don't have any inspiration, don't try to force something, cause it will sound like shit in the end anyway. If you can't find inspiration, maybe just play around with drumbeats, try creating different kinds and experiment with different settings and so on. Don't even think about melodies, just concentrate on drums, then all of a sudden you might hear a melody in your head that you think would fit the beats perfectly. Then it's just a matter of copying that melody to the patterns
about the username: don't know if you can change your username in your profile (it's editable at least, but I don't fancy trying it out with my username). You could try it there, or contact Yannick |

My advice: find a sample that you find really impressive to work with (such as a leadsynth). Playing around with softsynths such as vsti's (pro53, refx, absynth) does miracles for the search for good samples. Samples can inspire me quite simply to start playing around with them. I only once made a tune because there was a melody in my head. All other times, samples inspired me. Don't work with material you detest in any way: always search for the best you can find, and don't accept consensus. Making music is suffering on the technical side, but it's well worth every effort.
And let us hear it when you made something. We'll be harsh, but honoust

The best piece of advice I can give you is to learn how to build INSTRUMENTS with LOOP POINTS and NOTEOFFS in MT2.... rather than just firing off samples. This will make your tracks 1000 times better and will really be worth the effort of learning. I promise. Only then will you really know the true power of MT2. |

Best way to get to know MadTracker, I reckon, is to go "walkabouts" within the program. You know, just, check out everything, see where everything is and find out what it does.
If you get lost, just refer to the map (er, the helpfile) and use it to find your way |

a note-off is a command you can enter (by pressing Caps Lock) after a note. Then when you play the song, and the program comes to the note-off, it activates whatever envelopes and settings you've entered in your instrument window for the instrument that was played before the note off.
think of it like this: the note-off command is the same as when you've hit a key on your piano and then release it. The note-off tells the program when the key is released. Then the program does whatever you've set it to do in the instrument window
hope that helped |
