 |
Down at http://www.scenerep.32k.org/content.php?content=news, the tracking and demo scene Ezine Scene Rep is being published every month. Patrick Groove is taking care of this rather interesting digital magazine, and Yannick has been asked to write a promotional article on behalf of MadTracker. Since I'm going to write the actual article, I would like to gather opinions and statements. I'm going to point out why someone would want to use MadTracker, what its advantages are, what it can do for you as a musician, and why it still stands up against other programs such as Skale and Renoise.
What I need of you, most regarded reader, is input on why you started using MadTracker, why you still use it, and why you haven't switched to another program (yet). I can make up my own mind about what I like and dislike about MadTracker, and why I still use it, but I would be most happy with additional input. After all, you are the user, and you have decided why you started using and still use this program. Because of that, please share the con's and the pro's about MadTracker with me. Let's get an article that gives the right impression about MadTracker and its power. Let's go!
Thanks in advance,
Inge

Well... It's my first app and so on Since I started tracking 2 yrs ago I used only MadTracker. Only now I use another apps like MPT or old FT2. Well, it's the best win-based tracker, I think, altrough it HAS wlaws.
Damn, nothing that useful... |

The things that I like about Madtracker are al the envelopes that you can maken for attack, cutoff and so on (you know what I mean..) Trackers like Modplug and Impusle don't have that..... |

I've started with fasttracker, 8 years ago.
Played with MadTracker since almost the beginning, I'm playing now with Renoise, but I still use MadTracker sometimes.
Just waiting for MT3 ofcourse! |

Why do I keep using MT :
- Because it has a "normal" windows interface. Skale's FTalike interface doesn't make me feel at home (even after years of FT2 ane besides the fact it is graphically lightyears above MTs. If we could skin MT, I guess we could have a superb tracker). Why go back to a DOS interface in windows DOS mode ?
- Because music composing seems much easier than with others next-gen trackers (I haven't tried Skale that much, so I might have missed some features)
- Because Renoise does not work on my system.
- Because I can do all I want to do with it (well, almost). Atleast I don't feel my creativity being narrowed down by it.
- Because it remains 100% tracker : no need of any external VST plugin or midi equipment that I probably do not own. The tracking spirit has always been "No need for any external equipment nor (expensive!) piece of software to enjoy our production".
I started tracking so long time ago that I don't think I will switch to midi one day. Tracking (and all the things that came around it, in fields that sometimes go far from the computer nerd / scene freak world) makes it definitely THE adventure of my life !
- Because it brought tracking to a professionnal level.
- Because I want to rentabilize my registration !
- Because the wave export gives a perfect sound (This week, I heard from my boss that the tune I entered in the CMC mad sounded more professional to non-scene ears than one produced in a big studio it was competing with for a licensing !)
What could be better in MT :
- Several track effects on each track (without track re-routing)
- OGG sample support. This could make most modules size meet decent filesizes again without having to destroy the sound quality of todays 44khz 16 bit samples. The day such quality mods will have the same filesize a mp3 (or OGG) file size, there will be no more point releasing only in .mp3 format, and the tracking scene will (may) flourish again (Read Novus's point on mp3 releases on www.novusmusic.org. I fully agree with him on this. I myself started composing by discovering how other people work, and this wouldn't have been possible if the scene hadn't released .mod, .s3m, .xm and .it files in it's original formats).
- Skins.
Long life to MT ! Long life to the tracking scene !

I like to work with MT because after 4 years using it, it still gives me fast and good results. MT have a clear interface, it’s stable and the effects are easy controllable. Last year there was a moment I tough “MT is almost is dead” with the fast growing popularity of Renoise and little activity in the MT corner but the compo and some updates did a good job.
The only thing what I miss now in MT is : VST-instruments/fx, but that will be in MT3
Most important thing of MT, unlike other programs MadTracker got a soul ! |

Okay! I'm most happy with the feedback so far. Gonna ask some ex-users too to add their contribution. I want to get information from all different angles, in order to get the most complete image available. Final results will be published in the ezine
Kind regards, and feel free to contribute to this thread!

PRO
- nice no-nonsense and very intuitive interface.
- easy to install, get started, small program.
- The realtime effects
- The positive community, and the feeling that the program is written "by the people for the people" Yannick seems genuinely interested in making the program as good as possible, and not just as profitable as possible.
- backward compatability (IT,XM,MOD etc)
- the informative and up-to-date website, FORUM!
- The integration with MS Windows
- Also the fact that ordering/purchasing was easy, the quick delivery, and that my questions was answered very quickly. I find that every part of the chain that surrounds the "madtracker enterprise" is very well taken care of. No apparent weak links.
CON:
I wish that the scrolling of the channels, and graphics could have been a little more stable.

Well, once you make something good, it is profitable. So everyone is happy at the end.

The smoothness of the display is directly linked on the buffer size. This is a design problem but it is actually the easiest way to do things (from the code point of you).

Well, the main reasons why I still use madtracker (when I use trackers) is it's awesome soundquality. I just love the sound of this tracker.
And then there are other reasons like the fact that it isn't in dos mode. I personally hate dos mode programs, makes me feel trapped and that affects the stuff I make. I don't really think there is anything that already hasn't been mentioned. It's just the easy plain non distracting layout of everything that is so great (also very important reason).
Why I started using mt was because it was very "hi-fi" at that time. It felt more like a real music program with FX's and automation and routing etc. etc compared to fasttracker.
The reason I choose to also use Reason, hmm that did sound strange.. anyway, was because it was very hard to get rid of that tracker sound when creating leads for trance music.. Nowadays I don't do such music often, never almost, but I found a good blend of MT2 and Reason. Specially like to do drums in madtracker cause you can play around with them ALOT more.
The whole Madtracker community I think also had alot to do why I kept on using mt. You just feel like you really are a part of the whole madtracker "consept". You could say that Yannick really shares madtracker with his users. Kinda hard to explain without it sounding to dorky
All I know is that even MT3 will probably have to have the same sprit and easy layout to make me quit using MT2
sorry for the terrible english in this one, after all it is sunday. |

Why do I still use MadTracker? Hmm... Is that a trick question?
Ok ok, seriously. No, it's a great program. Great interface, easy to use, excellent quality, and no voodoo code!
That's what everyone else has been saying here, right? |
