Posted: Wed Jan 21 2004 21:00 Connecting MIDI keyboard to PC, please help. |
 |
I got an old Yamaha MIDI keyboard at a cheap price but how the hell do I connect that thing to my pc? I searched google and found out that I need a cable that goes into my keyboard and the other end goes into my gameport. But the problem is: I don't have a gameport! (I think that's the case with most new pc's) Are there any cables for MIDI keyboards that go into your USB-thingy? And how much do they cost? |

Well I did a quick search on google for "midi usb converter" and it showed some results naming the Yamaha UX16 MIDI/USB Converter. It's around 45 USD which is imo a bit expensive, though there should be some cheaper ones around.
Maybe you can find a cheap midi in/out pci card you can hook up to your setup, but I couldn't find one after a quick search.
Or you could do it yourself if you check this link. |

45USD is indeed too expensive and i'm not gonna instal any new hardware on this pc 'cause the pc is for the whole fammily and they don't want me to tamper with hardware and stuff. Any other options? |

And IF I decide to buy the 45USD cable, how will I be sure it will work with Madtracker and Fruityloops? If a program can use MIDI that is plugged in a gameport or midi-in off you soudcard does that mean that the program will have no trouble at al with USB-MIDI? |

Yup.. I have an m-audio radium 49 usb midi controller. It has the midi interface built in the keyboard and I hook it up with USB to my computer. Works fine with all applications. |

Thanks everybody! I think I'll take a look at my local audio equipment store some time this week to see how much they charge for the cable. |

Might consider getting a dirty cheap midi-keyboard that has usb in itself. Much easier, and probably even less expensive.

That reminds me:
You present your problem to the people in the store and ask them for possible solutions and more importantly the price of those solutions. But don't let them talk you into purchasing something right away. |
