I've seen this kinda thing suggested like 200 times before and in the end it's always the same, just a suggestion nothing more. Noone want's to take things into his own hands and nothing gets done. Wonder how it will turn out this time, or maybe this post will boost someone to actually do it, but I doubt that....
I'd bet that if "you" collect, legal for use, samples in a zipped file Yannick would gladly store it on his domain and link to the file inside madtracker or something simular, that is if the pack keeps an overall good quality. If not I have some space avalible, at least enough for a beginners sample pack.

Hell, I'll take the matter in my hands then I'll start to collect samples into a beginners sample pack. I'll start up a new topic about this after I've thought it through a bit (strategies etc). Expect it later today
EDIT: figure we don't need a new topic after all, since this one pretty much covers it all so far. So check my next post for more info... |

ok, so here's how I think it will work fastest. I'll throw togheter a quick upload PHP-script, put it on my webpage (I'll post the link here later) and then all who think they have something to contribute can upload there. The lines will be open for two weeks or something like that, after which I'll start going through what we have. I'll of course go through my own stuff also to see what can be used etc.
Note the following:
- make sure the samples you upload are cleared for distribution in free sample packs! Even if the sample you want to upload was in a sample pack you downloaded for free and legally, it doesn't mean the samples are automatically OK to be distributed further, so check that before you upload. I take no liability for the samples you upload. Best is if you upload only samples you've created yourself.
- pack all files in a .rar file, even if it's only one sample@10kb. For security reasons I'll ban all other fileformats from the upload script. If you want to send in several samples, feel free to put them all in one .rar file.
-name your samples wisely. Something like kurzweil_piano_C4.wav, not "thatc00ls0und2.wav".
- I'll probably downsample the samples when finalizing the pack, in order to keep the pack size small. Remember, we're doing a beginners pack mainly for use in tutorials, not a pack for record-deal-making productions. High fidelity isn't the main concern in other words. However, send the best version you have of your samples (my serverspace can take it), preferably 16bit 44.1kHz.
- if you want to be credited for some sample, put a txt file in the .rar file with the names of ALL samples that should be credited to you AND to what name/nick they should be credited. I'll add the info to a txt file in the final sample pack.
- Finally, just because you upload a sample it doesn't automatically get picked into the sample pack. So if you sample isn't in the final pack, don't whine about it, just get over it
that's all folks, start searching your archives. upload link will be posted later tonight
EDIT: right, here's the upload link: http://www.gnejsi.net/mtsp/uploader.php

Good idea! But what about instruments? They don't need to be 4 megs big just because they're instruments..
Poor instruments, they're often treated bad.

Good initiatives here...
If you can make a nice pack (that suits all the legal conditions) in less than a week, I'll bundle it in MT 2.5.

Right, so lets try and get this one into MT2.5 Deadline is set to next week thursday (23.12). I'll be out of town sunday-tuesday, but after that I'll start messing with this.
in the meantime since the deadline is so close, if you have trouble with the upload, send your .rar file to ADDRESS REMOVED. Please use this as a last resort though, as my SPAM-filter is pretty keen on throwing stuff into the trash these days...
I'll try to aim for a sample pack around 2-3 MB, but I'm thinking 5MB, like Elijah said, will be the absolute roof. Kinda depends on how much stuff you guys will send in
About instruments, why not? If you want to make instruments then by all means do. Just include them in the .rar with your samples |

Jens: *very* good initiative. I'll see if I can come up with some spicey stuff from sampled vsti's, so that new users won't start with crappy and recycled crap.
I won't use much of them myself anymore, so it's best to indoctrinate new users with furious new sawsynths. Let the world prepare for the dominion of MadTracker darkstep producers!

I am a little green man, trapped in your computer, running on a hamster wheel, making it work. Fear me, for if you do anything bad, I'll take a dump on your soundcard! |

Right. A filesize limit of 1 mb, but still searching for high Q samples?
So what on earth am I going to do with my 11 mb samplepack in rar format? Split it in pieces?
Ergo: can I send it to you?
