Im a Graduate research assitant, getting my PhD in Bioengineering at Clemson University. I work with laser cell patterning of neurons onto micro electrode arrays. Its fun, but time consuming, taking most of my time away from music. Still going to enter the comp though. |

For an artist, day jobs are anyway prostitution.
Ever heard someone telling a kid : OK, you can become an accountant... but you'll have to find a day job besides this !? I never did !
A famous rap star in France once told in a TV show that when a teenager is asked about what he wants to become after school, if the teeanager replies something "normal" like accountant, salesman... the teachers will say "great !". If he replies something that has to do with the artistic world, the teachers will say "Great ... and what job do you want to do ?".
And if I am a bit sarcastic, if he makes it in the music business, he'll anyway have a night job in the mafia |

you know, ive thought along the same lines, when your littl they tell you you can be anything you want, and then when your older music seems like a bad idea.
I would love to do music for a living, hoping to retire early an d run my own studio.
What is really discouraging, is that there are alot of people with no talent or orginality making alot of money in music, and many talented, creative people, who arent making out to well. mind you, if your really good, you should always be able to find gigs, but living gig to gig is not a great way to spend ones life, and not to good of a retirement.
I just kind of look at it, that im doing the smart thing, and making wise choices (cat stevens song says "for you will still be here tommorow, though your dreams may not".
But then i think about one of my great inspirations, george clinton, and i dont suppose he realy worried to much about wether he was going to make a decent living, he just did it.
Then i really wonder if im just wussing out, or doing the smart thing. Although, im pretty confident in my choices, its such a dream to get paid to do something like music that you love. Of course, recording and producing for others isn't always a picnic.
and maybe its more fun becuase there is not stress and pressure when your doing it as a hobby.
id love to hear what others think on this note, where does music fit in your life, what are your goals with it? get good have fun, play shows, or record albums and such? |

My main goal is to earn my life as a composer, may it be through my band (in this case Iīll be a musician too) or by composing for the multimedia industry (Iīm a really big fan of game music).
Nevertheless, the technical side of things, such as recording/mixing also appeals to me... And thatīs why I plan to run a studio next year. |

Didn't your site mention that you just got yourself a record contract? That would be pretty much into the proper direction, isn't it? If so: congratulations!
In reply to numbsong: since I gave up making music due to time restraints and other priorities, I mainly am active in music journalism. It's a thing I want to remain doing unpaid, since music must remain a thing I love, not I thing I have to do due to work. Then again, I'm in the privileged position to due very nice things for a living and a study, so I can't complain anyway.
To summarize: keep music as a hobby, not a profession. I'm too afraid to mess up my relation with music. |

Well, me has no diplomas. I don't have a job, neither following an education. Also, I got no love life. Besides that, I don't have a driver license. I have no plans for the future. I got some mental issues going on >>> my day- and night rythm are messed up, I lack motivation to take life on, and get in control of this all. I have no income, my mother wants me out of the house, I have very little contact with my family, I hate my neighbourhood, no wait... I hate my city and... making music is not even that fun to do. I am just good at it >>> I hate to make it, but I like what I make...
How ironic it may be, I actually love life
Now my main goal is getting a job, which is almost impossible for me. From there, I can start doing the things the way I should be doing them....
Life is like a diamond, hard as hell, but so valuable... |
Sure......I am the MCP....Or just MC...Uhmmm...I make battle music...There....That is more then enough... |

Well, I donīt think that having obligations involving music would mess up my relationship with it. But thatīs me. I know people who think your way... when a hobby becomes a profession, it eventually becomes boring like any other profession because youīre commited to doing it everyday.
Thatīs a good point, but I think that my love for music is really beyond that. To be a slave to music seems more like a dream to me Iīll let you know when the time comes! |
