1: don't know about degradation speed, but eventually all speakers wear out. I still think that mine sound great, but I could've just gotten used to them.
2: No.
3: I use standart Jack <-> Jack cables. Unbalanced. Since I upgraded my audio-hardware I now have balanced outputs, but if it aint broke don't try to fix it!
4: I've used my speakers in 3 very different room sizes. My experience is that if you like the accoustic properties of the room, the speakers are gonna do fine. They're near-field speakers, just stay in the sweet-spot and the room shouldn't matter that much.
5: What Blaster said!
... hope this will help you make up your mind. |

Man. I love the psychology of buying expensive things. The only thing I wished was positive feedback about the speakers, so I can be sure that I won't buy anything wrong. That issue seems to be fixed now, so thanks for that (especially Daniel, Blaster and djustiz) I just read up on balanced vs unbalanced (hurray for this page!), so I'll have to go for balanced cables.
As for the actual purchase: I don't have a mixing desk and I'll only use it for audio playback (no difficult hardware synth/sampler/whatsoever connections), so I want a rather cheap and simple one. It should have six to eight stereo inputs, possibly a mic or two, and some outputs. As for the balanced vs unbalanced story: I assume that it also needs to have balanced outputs (so XLR)? Does anyone have any advices on this? I know *nothing* about mixers, so this is all new to me (how exciting!). |

You can also run a balanced signal through Jack cables. You'll need to use "stereo" jack cables for mono signals though ... all you need is 3 conductors(?) ... I apologize if this doesn't make sense. I don't know the right technical terms in english.
How about looking into Behringers UB series mixer range, they're small, unpowered (un-amped) and relatively cheap.
