but for an even cheaper solution, is the local second-hand electrical shop. you'd be surprised at the price of an old technics deck (not SL1200) that still works very well.

you name it dude, my good ol' Technics SL-1500 just broke after running approx 32 years |

I´ve got an Sennheisser HD580 (it was near € 230,- I had it cheaper though (friends rock ))
+ sound (warm)
- lil´ bit too much bass
- 2 hours and (my) ears have some pain
I´ve also got an AKG 240 Studio (€ 130)
+ sound, very transparant
- sometimes/almost cold sound (this comes with a transparant sound i guess) |

AKG 240 monitor (130 euro's) here. I love its transparant and crisp-clear sound. It has a quite cold sound, but that is perfect for getting an idea of how your music really sounds.
When I went out to buy it, I entered the audiostore (feedback, Holland) with ten cd's and minidiscs that covered the full spectrum of sounds that I listen to: transparant ambient elektronic (orbital - insides), very deep drum 'n bass (matrix - sleepwalk), high-end production metal (fear factory - demanufacture), quality recordings (sting - mercury falling) and so on. We then made a pre-selection of headphones, and the salesperson then left me for an hour or two with five handphones which I kept testing. Sennheiser (can't recall which one) and AKG remained, and Sennheiser was a bit more warm and nice to listen to. I therefore choose the AKG, since its sound production is the most genuine and true that I heard.
I'm not saying 'go and buy AKG!'. I say 'compare them all, use good material to make comparisons, and define what the purpose of your headphones will be'. Good luck!

That's the way to buy indeed, test test test...
I did the same when I bought my monitors ( also from feedback ).
I just bought some headphones they were 49 euro's ( Sennheiser HD212Pro ), and to be honest you can hear that...
They just have so much bass in them, it's just not funny anymore. But since I use them mainly for DJing it's allright...

I bought my AKG K301 almost the same way as Inge did and never looked back since. Superb, crystal-clear sound even at high volumes, excellent wearing comfort for hours and a rugged finish for daily use in rough studio environment (e. g. living in a household which also incorporates a 3 year old anarchist (my son )).
Unfortunately, the K301 is not available anymore, but the K240 (Inge's model) has almost the same specs, so I guess, I'd take this one if my old trusty K301 buys the farm . |

I use whatever pair that is closest to me and still works. I sometimes use headphones for mic too, just to get that horrible sound-effect.
I have a couple sennheisers, a koss and a sony. I like the sound of all three, but I tend to eq. down the lower frequencies on the sony. |
