.bak files should be of the following format:
filename.MT2.bak
Removing .bak from the filename must do the trick. Sorry if my previous answer said something else.
If this is not the case, then your Windows Explorer has a program association with .bak files. If such an association exists, Windows will (most of the times) not display the extension. In that case, do the following:
-inside Windows Explorer, go to 'tools' -> 'folder options' -> tab 'file types' -> look up the extension 'bak', and click on it -> click on 'delete'.
The file association between .bak files and the program that opens them should now be removed, and these .bak files should be displayed as filename.MT2.bak inside Windows Explorer again. Now you can rename the file, remove the .bak extension, and open it with MadTracker.

Get inside the IRC client of MadTracker, since both Yannick and I are there now.
Got your e-mail, btw. These facts demand further elaboration

First of all, you should ensure that you don't hide the known extensions.
This is a wicked "feature" of Windows and should be disabled! Go to the "Folder options" from any explorer window, then go in "Display" then uncheck "Hide extensions of known file types" (or something similar as I don't have an English copy of Window).
This will save you a lot of trouble when you want to remove an extension (like for .bak files) and also will prevent some virus to trick you.
