When creating tracks which arent to heavy on melodies and string arrangements a tracker is perfect for its solid way of entering notes, but when you enter the world of complex strign arrangements and chord structures a piano roll is the vital key to being able to get everything down as you want it.
The problem is how to implement that into a tracker succesfully. Renoise has promised a piano roll for a long time now and still hasm't been ablt to implement it, in way that they see works and ties in.
Its one to think about
I would love to see one in MT.

Is there no VST wrapper that can do such a thing? So many people use trackers, that a pianorollthingie should have entered the mind of some programmers, right?
Right?

Shouldn't this be in the topic about pianorolls ?
Anyway, I don't see the problem of using pianoroll along side with the tracker.
I see it more like you can use the tracker interface as an option to for example the key editor (in cubase) or matrix editor (in logic)...
You know, arranging patterns as blocks are a very smart thing I think...

Increase the number of ticks and play with the 00 0EDx effect to slightly delay a note to give a more human feeling to your melody.
The 09xxyy effect can also help you. It works the opposite, so you may want to add a little bit of silence at the beginning of the sample. This would be even more accurate than the first solution.

as for what Yannick says,
Your method works but is very time consuming when you have a lot of notes to be entering. I want to be concentrating on the actual melodies and chords rather than fiddling with a delay on each note - entering these in a piano roll, and you can instantly see the delay and position of each note.
Both are very useful, a piano roll is soon to be a crucial tool if you want to create free flowing music...

Yes, that's an old trick, but a trick can never replace the real thing, which is the availability to use higher resolution (at least 1/64 blocks) so if I record it live without any quantisize it should sound quite natural. That's not possible to do with the tracker interface in a simple way.

Couldn't you have midi in to work with ticks too? That it goes to the closest tock instead of closest line? |
what is hip?

my thought exactly. Might not be able to replace a piano roll, but could be a sufficiently easy "patch" to implement in MT 2.5? |

But that would kill a whole line of effectpossibilities.
To be clear of one thing, this is nothing I want with MT2, but with MT3.

Hmm... yeah, true that. I don't use those effects though, so i wouldn't be bothered haha (plus i don't have a midi keyboard )!
Well, then ofcourse you could just have another column wich is only edx, it only has to be one character (1-F), because then you wouldn't have to put ED in front. Hmm... I'm not a programmer though, so..... |

That was actually a pretty good idea. A special effect column that only affects the delay of the note.
