I compose my music and usual (or maybe even always) im not satisfied enough. I want to be able to make something great some day.
Thinking and wondering, why do you compose? |

1. because i like it (this goes for my 'real' songs)
2. because i like what people do with it (and i like it (this goes for my hiphop/r&b stuff))
I also barely ever finish a song, most of the times because i don't manage to create a nice song structure. Hiphop beats are simple when it comes to that, you don't really have to come up with a bridge or intro/outro for that (though some of the best beats do have this), so this is just great fun for me to do. Next to that i try to make all kinds of electronica (my 'real' songs), and this is hard for me. I often come up with a cool rythm, melody, bassline or whatever, but can't make a song out of it. Or worse, I loose inspiration. |
what is hip?

Good question.
I do it because i like it. I started out because of the demos on the Commodore 64. My goal was to make a decent demotune, or understand how it was done - but I never did. Tracking has been one long learning experience about music which I have thoroughly enjoyed. Also there is something about the creative process which I like. I engage in a couple of things besides tracking that involve being creative, so for me that is the main reason. The end result is not the most important thing for me. |

I'm in it because it delivers me massive amounts of money, attention by very hot chicks, and because my friends hang out with me if I make music.
[...]
Back in the days that I made music, I was in it because of I liked the things I made. They gave this very special, warm, fuzzy feeling of being happy with what I made. I was sitting behind my pc at 3am, nodding my head like a spastic child who just plugged his thumbs into the electrical outlet, and doing all these nerdy little things to my songs to tweak them to their full potential. I loved it, because I loved my results. I showed myself that I was able to create kick-ass music.
Ofcourse, each and every song I ever made later turned out to be less well than what I perceived at the moment of making. That doesn't discard the feeling it gave me, and sometimes still gives me when I listen my old tracks.
I wish I had the time to pick up composing again. I already gave up on drugs and sigarettes, so I'm more than allowed to build up a new addiction.

Because it's great fun to get a final result that you're happy with (even if it's only for one week, or untill you post it in the forums and the comments start raining in ). |

I started composing the day I discovered protracker. Don't know why, maybe because I like to sing and I like music in general
I also started to compose because girls love music... too bad for me, when I was a teenager, tracked music was not recognized as music by the girls...(Now they recognize it ).
Nowadays I compose with a more professionnal view on the subject. It of course removes a lot of magic feelings you get when you compose just for fun, but you meet so many weird, funny and cool people (well, some nasty ones too unfortunately) that it's still very nice.
Besides this, doing music and art in general keeps people young. I am 30 but people often think I am 22-23, The lyricist I work with is 42 but people think he's 30... This "job" really keeps you young and connected to the youth. While most people of my age don't know the latest hits anymore, I still do, and this astonishes often the young singers I meet. |
