Which melody is the catchiest one ? - HELP ME !

Hi Madtrackers,

I'm currently working on a mainstream dance track for a label in Paris. However at some part of the verse, the whole team disagrees on what structure - mostly in the melody - to follow. Therefore I did 3 small .mt2 (150 Kb each) of the part we're disagreeing on, with minimalistic orchestrations (just a melody line, a bass line, the bassdrum and a synth arpeggio) to make the structure (especially the melodic structure) obvious.

You can download those test .mt2 here :
- Version 1.
- Version 2.
- Version 3.

Don't judge on the sound (those .mt2s are real quickies, the final product has much more elements and a much better sound), just tell me which one has the catchiest melody, and if one (or more) of those versions contain structural and/or melodical flaws within it's genre (commercial dance).

And of course, tell me which one you would choose if it were your track (and your money at the end of the process).

Not to mention that of course, the software I use (madtracker of course) is already accused of being the cause of our disagreements (as if MT could be the cause why several people could disagree on some melodical structure...), so help me choose the best, because MT's reputation is at stake...

My money is on nr 2. They are of course all very similar, but in my ears nr 2 became the least boring over time.

3 sounds like the more structured to me.

But none of them really caught me to be honest - probably because of the bass line. I actually muted the bass to judge.

OK. Just one thing : This is not a part that is going to be played in loop, but rather something that prepares a buildup that comes next (If your music is always at high levels of "musical power" you loose the surprise effect when the chorus comes in, especially considering this is a part of the verse)

In other words : The melody in this part hasn't to be the most catchy one (because the real catcher has to come right after this, but it's more a question of structure).

And of course the sounds used are *not* the ones of the final project (I know those sounds are pretty dull), and of course this bassline is just a very basic one that is not representative of the one of the final project (which is more complex... even too complex as some producers say)

I would have used all three, but in different parts of the song, like a creative input:) Too hard to vote, so I keep quiet:P Maybe melody 1 or 3, but melodi 2 has the creative touch, so (all three), (1 + 2) or (3 + 2) in my opinion:D

Edit:
Ahh.. the part is only going to be played once, then number 3. Number 2 has too unlogical placed location of the notes, and 3 is slightly better than 1.

I can't listen to any of them. Everything seems to be out of key, the bassline does odd things, the location of notes is weird, and I don't get what the main theme of the fragment is. I'm pretty sure that my hearing for music works fine, so I won't doubt myself in this matter. I need to hear the context, in this case, because now I'll just advice to use neither of them.

yeah, it would be better to hear the melodies in the right context.

Yep, it's a part of a verse. Not something that plays in loop. And it has to be easy to remember : If music gets too hard to hum too, the answer of the producers will be no.

That's exactly how I think. The word "Unlogical" is very important here.

You can grab an older mix of the whole stuff here.

Several things changed and will change from this version, including :

- The chorus is now less repetitive than in this .mp3 (Another hard battle among the team members, but I definitely think that repeating 4 times the same melodic line in the chorus isn't the best for the song itself)

- The reverb on the voice : I definitely think it's too strong and that it muds the voice. This is a fight I haven't won yet as the rest of the team asks me to put MORE reverb on it. Their argument for more reverb is that as the song is about ghosts, it has to be that blurry aspect a ghost has.

Besides this, tests done with version #1 showed a huge response in clubs, but still the team isn't yet happy with it (but probably not for the same reasons you won't like it!)

I guess that you want to improve the part around runtime 1:50 - 2:00 of the song, is that right?

And around 0:50 - 1:00 (it's the same melody)

As you are from Germany, I think you have quite good chances to hear it in clubs there too as the ones who were behind E-Rotic in the 90's (they live 5km from my place) seem to be interested in licensing it on the German teritory.

hmm, still hard, but I see the point you're making about nr. 2. Maybe nr. 3 would be better. It's just not my kind of music plus I don't understand what they're singing, so it's very hard for me to related to the track...

That's the one that finally made it into the song.

I guessed that Smile but still you can understand the logic behind it.

1) It's only one girl who sings, but with lotsa FX especially on the intro (her voice had to be multiplied sometimes and must come from everywhere).

2) The lyrics are hardly translatable as they are full of word play (Haven't you told me to make our local singers sing in French ? Here's the result ! Smile )

But a rough translation of the chorus would be something like :
I am just a ghost, a mirage in your life
I am just a ghost, returning in your nights
I am just a fantasm, Illusion here lies
I am just a ghost, right out of oblivion
I am just a ghost, a mirage in your life
I am just a ghost, returning in your nights
I am just a fantasm, vision of the mind
I am just a ghost that stayed in the well

3) Who cares what she sings when she looks like this :

? Very Happy

Hmm. I agree with what inge said... i donīt really get a connection of what youīre trying to do or get the direction the melody should walk to.... But with an overall view, that the final result will be in a better quality, i would prefer v3.

I canīt put my hand on my heart for this as i donīt like any commercial songs, but if itīs this you want to make. Youīre free.
