up until yesterday i only used vst effects sparingly. but thanks to the compo ive downloaded loads of them. i was playing with frohmage and superwave and came up with this... http://am1.madtracker.net/AM-1%20-%20filterexp.mp3. the tune isnt original (if anyone knows what it is please let me know), otherwise i would have entered it in the compo. i applied the frohmage effect to the master control, and then played around with the automation of the vst to get the desired effect. im sure the madtracker veterans will have discovered this ages ago, but i thought id share it with the noobs and fellow technophobes (scared of vst's like me). let me know what you think anyway. cheers andy

That's some nice experiment. Not very original as you said yourself, but nicely flowing and sounding kinda commercial. It gets a bit repetitive at the end though. I like the harp-ish theme; maybe you should have emphasised on it a bit more at the end. When you say "if anyone knows what it is please let me know", do you mean that you think the melody already existed? It didn't ring a bell to me, but the harp-ish theme sounded a bit 80ies-like to me. Yannick

thanks yannick. i heard the track in a club a few months ago, recorded it onto my phone and did a short version of it. it was a suitable tune for the effects i was experimenting with. the harp sound is using a vst called rhino which i recommend to anyone (its not free though). thanks very much for your comments. cheers andy

Pity it's an existing song, because it's (as Yannick said) sort of nice. You atleast show remarkable skills concerning creating a full, fat commercial sound. As for recognition: I first thought you re-created Daft Punk's Revolution 909 due to the filtered beats. Then the trance part kicked in, and my first idea was 'oh, wait, that's one of those sixteen million almost-identical trance songs that were made at the end of the 90's.' Apparantely not, but in my IDM/drum 'n bass infected hearing, every trance tune sounds alike

Id`be interesting in hearing a version with less frohmage. It sounded really good!! EDIT: Like Inge said - your stuff seems really well produced - perhaps you would write an article/post on how you work with your sound??

hi. I sat down last night and made another short track where i played with loads of effects, here is the final result in mp3. http://am1.madtracker.net/am_1_cheeze_fx_demo.mp3 It's trance again (i cant help what i am ), i "borrowed" the bassline, but pretty much everything else is original. the beats i was lazy with and just used a couple of loops (from breakbeat paradise), but there are some excellent single hit drum packs from the same site which are superb for original drum programming (i dont like vst drums really). the bassline is made using triangle2, with saw and square waves and distorting the sound as much as possible using overdrive, increasing the resonance etc, to make a dirty sound. the sub bass is also using triangle2 but using sine waves which make a deeper smoother bass. the main lead is made using superwave, on this one i played around with one of the presets to get the right sound, then applied a compressor and frohmage which i set on base (this gives the lead a deeper, fuller sound). i used triangle again for the repeated arp, and applied a frequency splitter to reduce the frequency overlap with the main lead (i read this in a magazine and it seems to work). i also set stereo delay on with a high depth and feedback, and set the panning on this as wide as possible (which gives the track more "width"). finally i applied a master eq, increased the high mid frequencies to emphasise the percussion, levelled the bass and brought the whole level down to get rid of any unwanted distortion. applying frohmage to the master track and putting the setting on base will make the whole track sound fuller, increasing the distortion a small amount is also good (makes the track sound a bit dirtier). then playing around with the cutoff frequency in automation on the vst makes big breakdowns (or for people who dont like trance, filters for whatever needs filtering in other genres, i dont know as ive never heard other genres). i then exported it and ran the wav through t-racks (which is a tube amp), limiting the highest and lowest frequencies (getting rid of noise really) and compressing, then exporting at a decent volume. with the mastering i dont really know the theory behind it all so just play around until it works. here is the mt2 so you can see how ive done everything (and also hear the difference between pre and post mastering). http://am1.madtracker.net/am_1_cheeze_fx_demo.mt2 I hope this has been of some help if anyone has any questions ill be happy to answer them, and if anyone has any tips for me then please let me know. cheers andy edit: I know the track is really cheesy, but sometimes cheese is good.

Dude !! This stuff sounds awesome , very commercial sounding as Yannick and Inge said already ... Damn u getting better and better al the time , how can i ever compete with that Great stuff in short, so now i'm gonna make myself some sort of copycat and go on experimenting with frohmage as well ... great post !!! bigandymac, that comment with the workflow is one of the most interesting things I've read here on the forum lately. I wish more people would do that... And preferably link to all used vsts

Hi folks, Inspirated by the frohmage topic (thanx to Andy) , i've played around with frohmage 2. This thread was really an eye-opener for me... Here's my attempt/test-track with frohmage action in it.. I seem to lose some dynamics if Frohmage is enabeled on the master ?! The filter sweep is possible with MT's internal "analog filter" and automation too, as seen in my song Embrace (bundled)

souleye - thats where i got the idea from. frohmage just adds an extra dimension to it somehow, the result sounds deeper and fuller i think.
