Last night I went back and re-jigged the intro, did a bit more with the bassline and generally gave it a kick up the arse. Please let me know what you think!

well mr dave, ive had a couple of listens to your track.
first impressions are that the drums and some of the samples are low quality, but the actual melodies are pretty cool. some parts in particular stood out (in a good way), the bass that kicks in at 1:08 is very cool, especially when it switches (at 1:42). the quiet arp is nice and the filtered pad is a cool sound as well.
there are a couple of things that maybe sounded out of place, the violin is a poor sample (the melody sounds very celtic though), and the drums. Obviously a lot of effort has gone into the drums, But the samples and in particular the snare, sound very outdated. the sort of rave piano thing in the intro sounds off key, and the melody at 0:52 (repeats throughout the track) doesnt suit the track.
some suggestions would be to change the drum samples (or use drumatic), beef up the sub (use triangle2), and get rid of a couple of the melodies (that i mentioned before). but on the whole it sounds good, and is interesting.
cheers

Thanks for your considered and comprehensive analysis
I do agree with many of your suggestions - though the 0:52 melody and the violin are in fact the two ideas that I originally based the tune around! But while I wouldn't take them out completely, they probably do need some pruning.
That snare... i used two samples together... one is a 909 and the other is a LinnDrum. no wonder it sounds outdated I still love that chunky sound! but you do have a point.
Glad to hear you liked it anyway; might give it another revamp when I have time, but sadly my xmas exams are coming up - a great opportunity for my computer to expand its dust collection Thanx again!

I, having this horrible weak spot for Orbital-alike tracks, ofcourse like the track. It resembles their work from 'the middle of nowhere'. Bits of industrial, bits of melody, quite 'square' sound, and lots of variations. The drums could get a bit more drive and shuffle, since they lack variation now. The 'flying' string and the main lead synth are very nice. The bassline could use some filter variations to make it more interesting to listen to.
Overall definately worth listening to. Most important flaw probably are the drums. Make them less lofi. Get 'the middle of nowhere', and check how things can also sound. I'm pretty certain you'll like it. |

thanx Inge! i've listened to orbital a little before; didn't realise it had sunk in to that extent tho! will check out middle of nowhere once i find a shop round here that sells it
if anyone's interested, I've uploaded another new version of this tune:
http://skull.madtracker.net/mp3/stringy-but-better.mp3
i made some changes to the instruments, added fx, tweaked the mix a bit and fired the lot through a snazzy multi-band compressor. it sounds a good deal more sparkly now.
in the end i didn't do much to change the drums other than add some fx and eq. i just couldn't bear to part with my beloved Linn....
if you like, please take some time to evaluate my new version; i'm not too confident of my mastering skills (i.e. compression settings!) just yet so i'd love to get some feedback!
