Ok, so, since the recent mastering boom that's going on on these forums I've decided to do some post-processing to my tunes also. I'll go right ahead and give you the links:

http://ftr.pri.ee/stuff/ftr-simple_things_pre.mp3 (original out-of-madtracker version)
http://ftr.pri.ee/stuff/ftr-simple_things_pst.mp3 (not so original mastered version)

The tune itself is your everyday bland and repetitive trance =). Nothing special there. But I'd like to know if I'm heading the right direction with this mastering thing. I'm not excpecting any professional advice, just your personal thoughts, what would you change or would have done differently. Any feedback will be appreciated.

greets and thanks in advance,
Future Tribe

I have compared your mastered track with 2 tracks from 4Strings and one from Kate Ryan.
Compared with these I would say that it sounds quite good, except the bassdrum which has to much lowend (especially in the mastered version). Also the synths could more panned left and right.

Thanks for the tips Tom!
It did indeed have too much low freqs, although I wasn't sure whether they came from bassdrum or bass. I ran the bassdrum through 70Hz highpass filter and it sounds much cleaner now.
I also took down the highs a bit, they were covering up the synths. Oh, and I dumped the main lead alltogether and replaced it with subtle Thrillseekers-ish high bass hits. I personally like the outcome much better than I did the earlier version.

here's the link to it: http://ftr.pri.ee/stuff/future_tribe-simple_things-final.mp3

feedback/comments appreciated Smile

Some things I would suggest would be to apply a lowpass filter to gradually roll off the really high frequencies above around 16-18 kHz or so, as it's adding too much brightness here (painful at high volume levels).

The other, and really more a mixing issue, is the bass, which is adding an aweful lot of content around 110 Hz, and thus really muddying up the bass range. To fix something like this in the mastering, you'd have to EQ this range down quite a bit.

Maybe try bringing the ~300 Hz range up a bit too, as with the ~3.5 kHz range, while the ~7.5 kHz range needs to come down, as it's adding too much sharpness to the sound.

Compression could also be better, in that the bass range needs more of it (aside from the muddy bassline, which would become a problem really), while the treble just needs to be sparked up. Definitely not brighter, but there just isn't any punch to the sound, as if the mids and highs have been compressed too heavily.

It's probably a good idea to bring the overall treble down a fair bit though, as the sound is just too bright.

Well, I know my opinion probably isn't as fair as everyone else's, but I just thought I'd leave you with some things to think about it. Certainly not a bad attempt though. Smile

Sigh... After hours (days actually) of messing around with this tune I came to a conclusion that mastering is best left to those who know what they are doing. I know most of you already knew that, but I guess I just wanted to see how hard the process really is.

I tried to follow your suggestions, especially those of Atlantis, but the only thing I noticed after each change in EQ etc. was that it sounded different. Not better, not worse, but different... So I gave up on this whole thing.

Anyways, here is the link of the final mp3, I'll delete the previous ones given in this thread.

Sounds much better though. Can't remember exactly how the old version sounded, but although the ~7 kHz range is still a bit sharp, and the extreme top-end still a bit too bright, mostly due to the synth you add at 2:00, it's actually sounding quite good. Bass range is much better now, although you can boost a bit more of that ~65 Hz power. Still missing some warmth in the lower-mids around 300 Hz though, and the mids around 600-800 Hz range are a bit too over-emphasised, but other than that I have no major complaints. Smile

You can also add quite a bit more limiting, by the way. Maybe another 2 dB, without majorly sacrificing the quality.

And, well, it is of course best left to those who know what they're doing, but then you can't expect to know what you're doing after only a few days. Wink

Nice work. Cool

The first two are broken, intentionally. The one in my last post works, at least it did 30 seconds ago Smile
