Posted: Sat Dec 03 2005 10:50 Search: microphone for mp3-player |
 |
For the sake of recording interviews I'm looking for a microphone that I can connect to the line-in of my mp3-player (iAudio M3L). As far as I know it needs to be an active/powered microphone, since it must be connected to the line-in (there is no mic-in). I plan to use it mainly for voice recording in noisy areas (backstage at concerts, in pubs, et cetera). I don't want to move the thing between the person I interview and me, but just a mic that I attach to the mp3-player and place between the other and me.
Can anyone help me in the search for what I exactly need and which ones are the best buys? Budget will be approximately 50 euro. Thanks! |

Well, if you're going to be recording in noisy areas, then you should probably try to get a mic with a figure-8 pickup pattern. Afaik the only other option if you don't want to pass the mic around and you don't want to have two mic's (which probably would be the best solution) is to use an omnidirectional or kidney pickup pattern, which unfortunately would pic up everything in the room also.
The optimal solution would probably be to get a small field mixer, and hook up two directional mic's to it, the send the line-level signal to your mp3 player. But that unfortunately would go beyond the 50€ budget |

inge. i bout an mp3 player with a line in record (which is a f*n cool feature) but i connected a karaoke mic to it (25 bucks) it has a 1/4" out, so you would need a 1/4 to mini adapter.. you basically have to kiss the mic when your talkin, but you dont hear much from the background at all.
so.. karaoke mic. cheap, effective.
:edit: sorry i dont like to read. yah. figure 8.
but maybe you should look into just moving it between yourselves. because if you were to get a uni-directional, that would ensure the least noise. |

Noise is not my primary concern. The recordings are only made so that I can transcribe the things that were said to text later on. Moving the mice seems like to much work, since I want to be able to chat away in a relaxing way with the interviewed person, and not having to ask them to repeat info because I pointed the mic the wrong way.
The Sunbuster-solution is, er, pretty much outrageous concerning work, load and price
Franklin: thanks for that. I'll have to start reading up on reviews for these type of mic's. If anyone is aware of some webbased review-site for portable mic's, then I would be happy to get informed about it. |

Just to make sure: the Lapel-mic must have an amplifier? Then the EZAV-solution as provided by Franklin would be optimal, since that integrates everything.
The link for the Archos-product didn't work here (atleast not a direct link, and I couldn't figure out which product you were referring to). |

I'm talking about the last product on the archos page I linked to. I could not find any more info about it, but since it says it's a stereo mic, then I assume it has at least two mic's that will pick up a different angle at least. As far as I can tell it should be similar to the griffin solution. An email to archos might shed some light on this?
About the Griffin solution, I'm not sure it needs an amp. I couldn't find any tech info about the iPod's connections, so I'm not sure if it has only a line in or if it has a mic in. I believe it's a mic in though, so that would suggest you need an amp to power the griffin mic if you need it for a line-in solution. |

I agree that this probaly is the best solution of all the solutions proposed so far. |
