I already knew that it was fully possible, and I've heard other examples of it but none of these that was this good. Listen to it in your headphones for maximum result:

The theory behind it is/should be that your brain can calculate the delay between your two ears and also how your head, in it's physic state, changes the sound source's frequency.
Someone with more expert knowledge of this is welcome to add more/change the info about it

thats incredible! its really weird though, i was checking behind me when i was listening. it would be superb if there was a vst that could emulate the effect for music.
great post.
cheers

Yes, that would be cool.
This one in particular, is (I think at least) recorded by putting three microphones in a doll, one in each ear and one in the chest, that has the same sonic influence on the sound as a human body.
At least that's what they've written on the other forum where I found this sound example first
But ofcourse it would be possible to emulate this with digital effects...

Wow, this sounds pretty cool. I really had the impression like I was tied on a chair with tape on my mouth, and some lunatic wanted to burn me with a matchbox. But he was walking around me and stuff... It sounded really realistic. It sounded scary too.
I know these sorts of techniques from ambient songs, but none of them are as good as this. I do think you can emulate this song with a couple of VST's... Perhaps we should try some research and find out? |

Brilliant, brilliant! For anyone who is going to listen: close your eyes! It's *so* weird!
And yes, some theory/explanation about this would be very nice, since this sample does an amazing job with tricking the mind into believing something that is not true. |

This is so cool! I have tried an application that could do something similar to this (placing the sound), I think it was a standalone for testing THX on the soundcard or something. |

i hunted around on the tinternet for a bit and found a commercial plugin:
http://www.spinaudio.com/products.php?id=19
there is a demo available which puts 1 second silence in every 10. i havent found any decent free plugins to emulate this, but the results from this are pretty good:

edit: i redid the clip, cos the 1st one sounded rubbish when i listened again. this one is meant to emulate the sound moving round in a circle around the listeners head and oscillating up and down slightly. |

WOW! Freakin awesome! I did close my eyes for my first listen because I wanted to fully grasp the surround thing and let my imagination run free... And what a ride it was! I sat there and got chills, laughing at the "danger" that wasn't there... It was really creepy and at the same time exhilirating and cool. I'm amazed that this was possible with only a pair of headphones. |

AWESOME !
i could never imagine that this is posible, @ first i listened with my eyes closed, but even with open eyes it is incredible, like some invisible matchbox is flying threw the room ...
Cool stuff !!!!
B.t.w. i love the sensual voice as well, i almost feel her breath in my ear
