|
I've been saving up for decks and a mixer as some of you know, and I've been hearing the arguments about "Classic" vinyl decks or CD ones. Naturally, the CDs are higher quality, more songs, blah blah blah blah blah... but there's just something beautiful about vinyl. It's like music in solid form, and it just goes so well with the thought of a DJ. What do you guys think about this topic? |

ehm... well vinyl is more expensive then CD's but it's worth it for sure;)
if you're buying some decks for vinyl be sure to go direct drive and not belt drive...
they say technics are the best but cheaper brands like soundlab will do I gues |

vinyl looks cooler, cds are more practical so it depends what your reason for djing is (i used vinyl )
maybe the future is a laptop and ableton live though. |

Most of my dj-friends are drifting from vinyl to cd (and they are dj'ing for years, so I assume they have the proper experience to make some sort of balanced judgment).
Vinyl indeed has a more appropriate dj-look, but cd's work just as nice on a technical scale, are way cheaper, and give greater room for variety (ever tried paying for pressing your custom drumloop on vinyl?).
Pioneer CDJ-1000 is the brand to go for, although that's horrible expensive. The lower series (800) are also said to be terrific for proper dj'ing.
For starters, I would go for a cheaper brand. The alternative is ofcourse to buy the Pioneer's second hand from similar dj's like you who did invest way too much money in something they afterwards didn't find that amusing after all
Last advice: start with dj'ing with someone else's equipment. Build up a proper idea concerning if it's actually something you really want to do and really like. Don't start investing like a mad man without proper prior knowledge about what you want and what you like. |

I love vinyl, but after collecting it for a number of years, and trying to take care off it and store it, its a pain in the ass, especially if your young and move every year or 2. You carting around 200-300 records is a pain in the ass, cds are better i guess, easier to care for, smaller, but really if your going to got digital i'd go all the way. Ive been djing vinyl since 1997 and Im now thinking MP3s are the way to go, you can carry around an unimaginable amount of music on a 400 gig harddrive, so id like to have serrato ro final scratch 2 but i dont have the dough. Another great option ive been thinking is a touch screen monitor. That used with traktor and you really have a hands on experience, no im not saying it compares with the feel of vinyl, but if thats what you want just buy one table and use it for scratching and cutting. Vinyl is going to mean you are going to have to spend a shit load of money on equipment and vinyl, and if you dont reinvest atleast $100 a month, your going to start sounding old fast. While i like vinyl, I really think vinyl fetishists are silly, when the disadvantages are so large. |

Me neither, because that would mean I'm, well, eeh... dead... But seriously, I think that thingy is a good idea. I mean, you've got traktor DJ and similar for the computer. With this you can get a real(?) hands on feeling without having the hazzle of setting up a computer and external controller properly. I think this would work well for someone who wants to try out DJ'ing but doesn't have the money to go all vinyl. Besides, what is easier, carrying around your iPod or carrying around a couple of crates of vinyls/cd's? |
