Iv always been down with old school gangster rap, even though it had its hayday before I even knew it existed (90-96.) IMO G-funk, as pioneered by Dr.Dre is the best genre within gangster rap. Snoop dog, dre, tupac and others made theyr most famous raps over G-funk beats. G-funk as the name suggests is based off of slowing down the tempo of funk music, and tipicaly features a high portamento sine wave lead.

Recently I started trying to compose my own G-funk tunes, I have set my self the goal of composing one G-funk beat per day until I get competent at the genre, at which point I hope to do some innovating.

I know theres some hiphop trakers on these forums and I was just wondering if any of you have composed any G-funk beats, or if not, perhaps you also have always admired the genre and dreamed of composing your own beats in this style.

For those of you who are not familiar with this genre and are interested, check out the album "The Chronic - Dr.Dre" It is THE classic example of G-funk. Im interested what all you pros think of Dre's work because in my opinions he is one of the top hip-hop producers of all time.

If you would like to hear a quick sample of this genre I suggest these two songs:

I definitely rated Dr Dre highly since back in the day, but like any producer he did have his off moments now and again. The G-Funk era was memorable and a period in hip hop which I really miss. After the late 90's, things started to go downhill in hip hop and now we have so many commercially successful tunes today which would have been laughed at back then.

Well about G-Funk it was influenced heavily by George Clintons P-Funk (Parliament-Funkadelic), where Dre sampled sections of many P-Funk songs for the DoggyStyle album. It worked brilliantly with Snoops verses, a classic album. Yeah.. a G-Funk revival would be cool. Razz

I loved Dre´s Album "The Chronic" and "Doggystyle" Snoop´s Album produced by Dre back then was the one and only album I liked of Snoop and still is.
I´m not really into his new tracks with a few exceptions.
Warren G´s "G Funk Era" was a good album too.
I liked g-funk in the 90´s but actually I liked almost all Hip Hop Artists in the 90´s.
It was a lot more different sound than it is today.
I miss those fat beats and drums and cool melodies.

I tried to produce g-funk beats back then on an Amiga 500.

I think the main thing of g-funk beats were those portamento chipsounds which I liked a lot.

Well try makin one....would love to hear it.
