Does fasttracker work under Winxp? Never tried. Your soundcard must come with dos drivers. There are universal-external drivers that might do the trick if your card doesn't have dos drivers of its own. Tell me if you need them, and I'll look them up for you.

hmm.. what i've had to do until i found MT2, is dual boot with windows 98, and use my old soundcard (SBAWE32) under windows 98 - 'exit to dos mode' and start FT2 from there..
i didn't know there were other ways back then, but perhaps a dos emulator, maybe DOSBox? i know DOSBox can even emulate a soundcard for you, so perhaps that can do the magic trick.. check http://dosbox.sourceforge.net - there is a windows version available to download.
or run FT2 in win98 compatibility mode, but i think you'd still need the older soundcard for that anyway.. (im sure you can pick one up for no more than 15 bucks at a swap meet?) .. actually, forget that idea, cos for older sound cards you'd need the autoexec.bat crap too (eg. SET BLASTER for SB cards). besides, Win98 compatibility mode sucks rather badly in XP .. in fact, XP sucks rather badly itself, right Inge?

This was actually the most posted question on United Trackers. I guess answers are already here, but I do have a comment about it.
Though this might be a bit easy for me to say since I never used Fasttracker 2: evolve! Why not use modern software? It's better than the old trackers.
If he really wants to keep using FT2 then I think Skale is a perfectly fine solution. It's an FT2-clone for Windows when a new version eventually comes out (there's some missing ft2-features right now, but still functional). |

MT2 is more FT2-compatible than Sk@le. So I'd go for MT2.

But yeah, really, why go looking for a tracker that can play FT2 files when you've already got one? |

I dunno about Skale (I played around with it a little), but I think MT2 is what he really needs to learn. I mean, look at all this support it has now! And MT3 is in progress.
Speaking of Skale, me thinks it's time to take a look at its latest version.
Other than that, you do indeed need DOS support drivers if you are going to use FT2.
Also, there was a FastTracker3 beta, but I never got around to playing with it. |

Well, cool. I had the beta some years ago and never checked its progress. Didn't know it became what it is now. By the way, did anyone else here ever enter their name on this list? ... http://neptune.spaceports.com/~ftsource/names.html
I did ~3 years ago. See if you can find me.
Speaking of these trackers... the only 32-bit trackers that I know of with current support that followed in the footsteps of FT2 are MT2, Skale and Renoise. Are there more? What about Acid and the other commercial products? |
