Here's a rather easy introduction on filters.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_filter

This doesn't explain every filter used in MadTracker, but it does enable you to deduce the function of the ones not mentioned in the article itself.

Note: wikipedia isn't the most trustworthy source for information around, since the information provided is only generated by volunteers. It's not gospel.

Hmm I think I can help out here. I have a book about creative recording.. I remember I made some notes in my notebook:

I see it uses EQ rather than a filter.

Bassdrum is usually 50-150hz with the note on 70-90hz
- for a punch: boost 80hz
- deeper kick: boost 50-60hz, cut above 220hz
- extra definition: boost 3.5-6Khz

As for the bass it's ranges from 41hz-2/3Khz
- low bass: boost 80hz
- nice aggressive bite: boost 500-800hz
- low/mid cut around 200-250hz (although I have no idea how to read this (I made the notes some time ago)).

A synth bass can produce high frequencies so you could try to cut those.

I guess I'll have to look it up for some more info.

(Heia Tromsø!)

Another link you might want to try is:

http://www.futureproducers.com/forums/showthread/threadid/29861

Kick Drum

Any apparent muddiness can be rolled off around 300Hz. Try a small boost around 5-7kHz to add some high end.

50-100Hz ~ Adds bottom to the sound
100-250Hz ~ Adds roundness
250-800Hz ~ Muddiness Area
5-8kHz ~ Adds high end prescence
8-12kHz ~ Adds Hiss

I don't think it would do much good since I'm no authority on the matter, just relaying what's written in a book by a professional sound engineer.
