Oh, thats a hard one. I havent been successfull in that yet. Maybe Buzzrooms Buzzcomp bundle? Havent tried that out yet and I dont know how to use multiple inputs (sidechaining) in Madtracker.
-> BTW, created an Excel file with my posted VSTs. If I convert it too .csv it should be easy to implement in a MySQL-database. |

thanks beatmax, those buzzroom tools are AWESOME !! very handy indeed, and 100% free!.. no sidechain compressor (unless i'm blind?), but they're still really good set of compressors and limiters.

Posted: Sun Jun 20 2004 10:26 CPU usage of VSTis |
|
To make the database even more useful I took the time and tried out every vsti I have on the list and in my actual collection and analyzed its cpu consumption so you can get a rough idea which vsti how much cpu uses. The data is based on my actual PC configuration:
CPU: PentiumIII , 1 GHZ
OS: WindowsXP (tried it in Win98 too, much higher cpu usage!)
Soundcard: SBLIVE5.1 Player with KX-drivers
The data is without any applied effects.
Of course the cpu use will vary with your configuration but the cpu usage well be hopefully lower than mine (1 GHZ).
The monophone test is just the plugin played in one track.
The polyphone test is with then plugin playing 5 voices at once (septime chord + 1 voice (lower octave)).
I analyzed the CPU usage but taking screenshots of the actual cpu status display counting the lines. It was a really tedious job but I think it was worth it.
Optimizing VSTIs regarding cpu usage:
-------------------------------------
Some vsti seem to have a quite low cpu usage but they sometimes jump if you play e.g. chords. The Superwave P8 is such a case. The problem is the RELEASE value in the amplitude ADSR settings because there the last notes will be blended with the following notes and thats doubles up the voices at that moment -> CPU usage could jump up. So if you see this behaviour you now know how to avoid it.
Another point is the maximum number of used voices. Some vsti`s like the FreeAlpha have a setting to set the maximum number of voices, decrease this value to the actually used chords, e.g. if you used 3 notes set it to 3, if you used 5 set it to 5. That way the cpu usage won't get that high. A good example for a well coded plugin is Native Instrument`s Pro53. I used the demo version. Very low usage , great sound, lots of voices, no cpu usage jumps (due to release values in the ADSR settings)!
Of course you could replace the VSTi by the sampled version of itself but that should be the last option.
If you got any vsti optimizing tips please tell me. |

|
EnergyXT
I don`t know if you have heard about it yet but it is a really great tool. It is available as VSTI, VSTe and as standalone software. It is a modular system which hosts VSTis and has features over features. I am thinking about registering it (39€). Tried it out you wont be dissapointed. If you use it as an instrument you can add modules like Arpeggiator, Envelope etc to it. One point I am not very sure about is how to automate the parameters of the VSTis in it but I have heard that the coder of it is quite fast in response. Though I wouldnt change to it completely because I really love Madtracker and so I use it "only" as instrument which integrates pretty well in Madtracker, there are even several skins for it to match your needs. Its worth the money. A must try out. Its fully functional and you can save your settings/layout but it won`t reload it. So if you have it in a module and reload the module all settings will be gone. But you can get a real good overview of all its features.[/img] |

I guess thats a problem of SynthEdit. Professional coded plugins are mostly coded in C or something else and therefore optimized for their tasks. So they will likely be more cpu efficient. Talking about ganymed`s cpu usage, you can adjust the number of voices (polyphony settings) used in the settings. Reduce it to the actually used channels (e.g. if you play chords). I experimented with that and just for fun raised the number of processed voices up to 16+ and I could see the cpu usage in Madtracker rise as fast up to freeze point. |

[as inspired by Toms post about why not using MT anymore]
I know someone is working on a tracker-interface vst plugin for pianoroll-based sequencers. The question is: is there also a pianoroll-interface vst plugin for tracker-based sequencers? Beatmax?

Hi Inge!
I guess EnergyXT could come in handy there because you can use it as an VSTi instrument too. It is a modular system and you can add as many parts as you want, arpeggiator, sequencer, midi part, audio part, envelopes. Lemme see.. if it has a piano roll.....It has (Midi Part / Sequencer). I just tried out how many beats you could record (using the mouse to increase the value). Well I stopped at over 500 but there is more. This piece of software is a miracle so many functions in a 700k dll-file. I am really serious thinking about buying it. |
