About Franklin's track, I mastered this quite a while ago, so I'm not sure what's happened there. I sent a sample back to him but never heard from him since, nor here for that matter. I think it turned out well, but the vocal would have worked better having come down a little in the mix after all, which I later suggested.

I'm back again, i am sorry for this terrible late reply but i was out of the country for work ..
I have three versions over here, the original , the Trillium version and Atlantis version.
The Atlantis version is by far the best master of this song IMO , but just listen for yourself, and once again , thanx to Atlantis for taking the time and effort to send me the mastered sample !!
The original masters are 24/44.1 versions, these are 192 kbps MP3 versions!

this has been a really interesting and helpful topic, so thanks to everyone who took the time to reply.
I listened to the 3 mastered versions of franklins track. the atlantis one definately sounds the best as the mid high frequencies stand out more. Only thing is that the bass drum sounds a bit weird, like it is boinging (i cant find any word to describe it). other than that it sounds great.
cheers

Thanks for sharing your work guys!
This was very interesting indeed, I think Atlantis did a great jobb enhancing the voice. And it seems he has less "waisted headroom" when comparing the graphs of the sounds. I agree with BigAndyMac that Atlantis`s version is the better - but both mastering enginneers certainly enhanced this song considerably.

I noticed this thread received over 100 hits since Franklin last posted the samples, which seems a bit a worrying...or not.
Anyway, thanks for the positive comments. Regarding the kick, I can only enhance what's already there, and the subtle processing I apply during mastering shouldn't necessarily change things a lot. Perhaps the multiband compressor enhanched it a little too much, although I believe I had my reasons for setting it up the way I did. Of course, it's no problem for me to change this should Franklin want me to.
"Less wasted headroom" is a...nice way to look at it. Obviously, a point of mastering is to get the volume up to commercial standard, and I believe I've done so without sacrificing the quality.
As you might see/hear, around 80% of mastering comes from the mix itself, and it just enhances the sound that extra 20% more.
Notice the difference in stereo imaging too, by the way? |
