Very nice article. I think it will get most ppl working with vst quickly

Since VST plugins can be freely moved around your hard disk (the .dll file and its accompanying presets), you can easily set your VST folder up like this.
|
This is not correct. Most vst(i)'s can be moved around freely, but a few will give an error and need to be reinstalled when you want to move them around. |

Can you please mention which VST plugins exactly give this problem?
I think I will advice people to always install VST plugins into the same folder, so that moving them afterwards never will be necessary anyway.

Umm, from the top of my head: synth1.
I also think the Native Instruments vsti's don't like being moved around, but I'm not too sure about this. Mostly the commercial ones might give problems (serials etc.)
Ultraphaser gives an error here too although I'm not sure it's because I moved it or something else :p
It's as you said Inge: always install vst and vsti to same folders, but it's best they have a "parent folder" for example vstplugins and below that you have effects and instruments.
Some other tips :
Have a seperate folder for every single instrument and effect. Things tend to get messy if you place everything in one (see buzz generators for example ).
Instruments for me are limited to a few favourites and everything I don't use (often) I have in an other folder. I don't have the time to learn the ins and outs of each synth so I'll never be able to unleash the full potential of them all.
I have my effects sorted by type, just like kvr since I can't remember what each effect exactly does when I see only the name
Also I've limited the amount of effects. It's no use to have hundreds of them when in reality you'll probably end up using a few. Generally 1 or 2 of each type are enough for me. Remember: you can always add more. |
