From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In musical notation legato indicates that musical notes are played smoothly. That is, in transitioning from note to note, there should be little to no silence between notes. Legato technique is required for slurred performance, but unlike slurring, legato does not forbid rearticulation. The legato is commonly shown in standard notation as either notes that are set off from the others by being written in a smaller manner than the others. Or, it would also be shown as an arch from one note to another, different note. One example of legato would be in the basic drumming rudiment the Flam.

That was a good quote, because I was actually thinking of "guitar legato" (maybe slurring is a better term), i.e. hammer-ons & pull-offs, although I would like to achieve the same effect with other instruments as well. I'm not sure about the technical terms, but I think one way of describing it is "less attack than usual" on the note, so the transition between one note and the next becomes softer and less distinct. |

I think you can get this effect also by increasing the resolution of the track.
Legato runs by a guitarplayer are notes played in rapid succesion (with one hand) I believe there is a thread on the subject somewhere regarding "hammerons" which is the effect guitarplayer use to play legato runs by "hammering" and pulling the notes for a quicker succesion of notes. If you are trying to emulate this effect you should search for the hammeron thread. |
