Stereo spread in madtracker or after?

I am wondering whether its best to stereo spread within madtracker or export single channels spread them and then combine all the tracks together? I have a stereo spreading vst and i have loaded it for every single track of my song. But now im a bit overloaded...

I'm thinking it's best to do the stereo spreading by panning individual instruments to where you want them during mixing. A Stereo spreading VST I'd use only on the final mixdown if I find the mixdown too narrow or occasionally as an effect on one or two instruments (and then probably using extreme values). But imo if you feel you need to stereo spread every track then something's probably gone wrong during mixing.

It's weird, because a lot of my songs sound very thin. I don't know whether its my mixing or whether its my mastering. Plus I don't know with mixing, should I use the kick as a reference? IE, if the kick is too loud the rest of my song will sound squashed. If the kick is too soft, the rest of my track will sound too weak (or not full).

I like making music, but this mixing thing is complicating things for me.

I'm not an expert, not even close.
But when I make my music I try to make sure I have one instrument for every frequency. well.. not 20k but at least some thing real bassy, some things in the middle and some at the top. Then I let the EQ do the job of filling up the areas I feel are weak! Smile

You can find some tutorials on the web, just google something. But all of those tutorials will say that there aren't any specific rules, just go with your ears and do what sounds right to them!
