hahaha! fox, you're comedy gold! Smile

tnk- to me caillean can sound like a boy's name, especially in english, but if you change one letter and make it caileen, then suddenly it's more likely to be a female.. and even more female - caila .. (that actually sounds pretty good - caila .. good spelling and good name!) .. aaaaanyway..

Actually while recording our MT compo entry. Gender test was pretty useless in her case Smile (She *never* showed up with the same hair color twice !...isn't this a typically girl attitude ?)

Or maybe CD-la. Audio-CD-lla? Maybe...

Why not after all.
However, when I found her the "Caillean" nickname, she asked me to find her a handle ending with "Line" (like "Caroline"). And as Lean in english is pronounced like the "Line" in "Caroline" (well, atleast like the french pronounciation of "Caroline"), and as it was quite original, we went for "Caillean".

But if someone has a better idea here...

A little change could be enough though...It depends on how you pronounce her name...

KayLene maybe, if that is how you pronounce it Smile

The song you reviewed in the MT compo 3 is quite typical from what Caillean usually sings (except that she does not sing in english and that her vocal performances in French are much better). Do you see such a song recorded by an artist called "Free sex" ? Smile

But for sure, it's one of the most commercial sounding names Smile

(I already tought of a song called "free mp3 sex")...the song that would show up at almost one research out of 2 on google !

Why not. We're rather thinking about Quayline or Kyline, but Kayline could make it too. I'm disturbed by the K at the beginning of both Kayline and Kyline, that sounds too hard for the style of music she does, and "Cailine / Cyline" would for sure be pronounced as "Saileen" or even "Céline" by many people.

"Caillean" is a name that REALLY exists (but that is quite rare. It's one of those "modern" names).

The producer that warned me about this name issue said she should keep her real name (Julie) and add another name of her choice (Julie Jones for exemple). But that's something we're not quite happy with as here one singer out of 2 is called Julie (Julie Zenatti, Julie B. Bonnie, Julie Pietri, Juliette, ... to drop a few names), so we wanted something more original. We do not want our audiance to say "This song is by Julie...Julie...what Julie was it again ?"

When we worked on finding her a handle, she asked me to help her out on finding something that ends with "Line", "Lina" or "Leen / lean". That's how we ended up on "Caillean".
She likes Irish names a lot (remember : Irish music = Often very melodious = Like what she tries to do), and as Caillean is an Irish name...

Any cool idea someone ?

I think Caillean is a pretty cool name for pronounciation. I would pronounce it as [kay][li][an], which is quite nice to pronounce in for instance a radio program.

The problem is that it offers many possible pronounciations, and thus can be confusing. But, if marketed properly, it should be no problem. Take Avril Lavigne or Evanescence for instance. It could be pronounced in quite some ways, but due to proper marketing and promotion, everyone knows how to pronounce it 'correctly'.

Thus: I would keep it.

I made her hear it (but she always asked me what you were talking about...Improve your english, cail' !...Yours was OK, had no problem understanding it).

I pronounce it [Kay][Leen] (with an "A" like in "are you ?"), but we're quite open minded on the pronounciation of her name.

But if she is marketed by a small label ?
I noticed it was no problem for younger people (30 years old or less), but quite hard to remember for older ones, especially the ones who do not speak english

Well, those names are a bit special as they are French names turned into English. But even properly marketed, it does not help. For exemple, because of our hopeless national unability to speak english (hehe, check our MT entry!), the famous singer Dido is known (and called) "Dee-Dow" here, whereas the right pronouniciation of her name is rather something like "Die-do". And I guess Dido has a lot of marketing behind her...

That's my opinion too.

You can't stop the French from badly pronounciating English words anyway. Mr. Green

Some try hard not to speak them too badly (this doesn't mean they pronounce them OK), but most of us...
In the same time, french TV, the institution that (subliminally) tells people how to speak, gathers probably the worst english speakers !

Dee-dow for sure knows a lot about it Smile

I remember one day a very popular TV show had to promote a record called "Never trust a guy who after being a punk, now plays electro". The host said : And welcome [band name here] for their album Neveterust... err... Newguytrus... err... Nivertrost... err... this album !
